The mistrust between the Wehrmacht and SS is not surprising given the pre-war political maneuvering of the Wehrmacht to effectively eliminate the SA (Brown Shirts).
Otto Carius (Tigers in the Mud) described meeting SS units on the Eastern Front during the long fighting retreat of 1944. The SS and Wehrmacht had different equipment (armor) and supply chains. By this point in the war the SS was better fed and more well-equipped than the Wehrmacht. It sounds like the roles were reversed early on.
