I would definitely put the strongest hitch you can get for that truck.
My trailer broke the bolts off and bent the hitch down when I crashed. I think it was a 8k hitch. But like I said I was pretty heavy.
As far as playing with the trailer brakes for stopping,be very careful with that. Best to adjust the brakes correctly and use the pedal. But me bad hit on the trailer in the snow could be you last.
 
A Class V is the strongest, and because I'm not at work I can't verify if anyone makes one for your truck. A weight distributing hitch would solve the problem if a new receiver is not in the cards. You can get a 10,000/1,000 for around $340. I could probably beat that ;)
