Ultra-long range shooting workshop

I'm actually looking at adding a bolt action platform to the collection, I've priced out just under 2k for a rifle in 300 win mag, optic, bipod, and then new muzzle device to attach my can.

Current rifle I'm looking at a Ruger Hawkeye Long Range Target 26" barrel however the distributor is out of stock and a MSRP of almost $1700 but my price would be considerably less.

However, for about $900 less in MSRP, a Ruger American Go Wild with 24" barrel, not nearly as heavy a barrel, 4lbs lighter overall, may have to be the choice given my regular distances to shoot are less and it would be a platform to learn a bit about long range without breaking the bank...

That being said, I already have a platform that should hit the ranges easily, it just needs a proper optic... I just would like to have something I could put an existing can on...

I'm putting together a two day workshop sat March 15th and Sunday march 23rd to teach ultra-long range shooting. This course would be for the novice to intermediate shooter.
What are MY credentials?, Im 52 years old and I have been shooting rifles in a long range capacity for over 40 years. Below is a pic of me nicking gophers at 100+ yards with a marlin 30-30 at age 11. And two videos of me shooting 1000+ yards at steel. I have (actively) been at the forefront of modern ultra long range shooting in terms of technique and equipment since the age of 30. Hitting a 24" steel plate at 2300 yards with my custom 300 win mag is pretty standard for me. I can do this due to my 40+ years of shooting experience and 20+ years of research and experience in regards to hand load development, equipment choice and setup, weather and atmospheric readings and shooting technique. I have been asked numerous times by people if I could teach them how to shoot like this. And of course this is not something I could teach in 1 day. So my proposal would be a 2 or 3 day course. 1 or 2 days in a classroom, and 1 whole day out at my 1000 yard+ shooting spot in Tillamook to actually put what you've learned into practice.
WHAT DO YOU NEED?
1.BASIC UNDERSTANDING OF GUN SAFETY
2. A RIFLE OF 308 CALIBER OR LARGER THAT HAS A HALF DECENT TRIGGER SYSTEM, AND A SCOPE WITH AT LEAST A FIXED 10X OR GREATER THAT TRACKS RELIABLY AND HOLDS ZERO.




The course would cover:
Day 1 (possibly 2) classroom - NOT IN THIS PARTICULAR ORDER

1. A brief history of long range rifle application and hard target interdiction.
2. Proper shooting technique (prone with bipod, tripod, and improv bipod).
3. Caliber choice and ballistic characteristics.
4. Hand load development for long range (bullet choice, seating depth, neck tension, powder type and weight, annealing, die choice etc).
5. How to create a shooting calculation using ballistics apps and kestrel weather meter, and also how to create a shooting calculation with just your reticle and simple math.
6. Equipment choice and proper setup for long range and how to get your rig shooting 1/2 MOA or better.
7. Scope type, magnification, and scope choice and how to get the most adjustment from your elevation turret. How to read your reticle (mils and MOA) and use holdover.
8. Using a spotter and shooting without a spotter.
9. Long range shooting application and practicality during domestic wartime or civil unrest. (It's a shame I have to even cover this but I feel due to the current political climate its necessary).

THIS COURSE WILL ALSO BE IN PRINT FOR YOU TO TAKE WITH YOU TO REFERENCE LATER.
This is going to be a skill set worth knowing if we, God forbid get into a civil unrest situation in this country. As I'm sure some of you know, we are also very close to World War III and it's not that far beyond possibility that we could have boots on the ground here in this country. So just having this in your toolbox is just another thing that's going to enable you to greatly enhance your chances of survival in a situation like that.


Day 2 - AT THE RANGE
A full day of long-range shooting and putting these methods into practice.

PRICE? A course like this would be a fair amount of work to cover comprehensively and do correctly. We are talking 6 to 12 hours of classroom teaching and 8-10 hours of shooting over the course of 2 days .
I feel $400 per person would be fair. This would include all the days and also my personal cell phone number for students to call at anytime for questions or a refresh. Im a gunsmith and I would be willing to include a full rifle setup as well (basically this would be you coming out to my machine shop and me helping YOU set up your rifle to shoot long range).

I think this price for the amount of work I'd be putting in is more than fair.

If you had to say in your experience what's the best long range round for 1000m plus

I might have another rifle to bring. A friend has an old school Blaser (not sure of model) in 300WM. Interesting rifle. Straight pull action, used ordinance steel for the barrel. Supposedly these were quite accurate. I haven't shot it, but .300 WM would get me out farther than my .308...

Took a brief look, seems 300win mag offerings by CZ have been discontinued, Begara basic models MSRP for 500 more than a just above basic Ruger with similar Barrel length and stock where the nicer Ruger on the upper end of my looking my coat would be slightly less than the Begara msrp and Howa looks to be similar to the basic Ruger and in the same price point.

I've seen some Howa rifles at the shop, I tend to favor the Rugers personally...

Took a brief look, seems 300win mag offerings by CZ have been discontinued, Begara basic models MSRP for 500 more than a just above basic Ruger with similar Barrel length and stock where the nicer Ruger on the upper end of my looking my coat would be slightly less than the Begara msrp and Howa looks to be similar to the basic Ruger and in the same price point.

I've seen some Howa rifles at the shop, I tend to favor the Rugers personally...

Ruger precision and Browning X-bolts are a good option as well for 300WM.

I inherited a 30-338 tang safety ruger 77 with a heavy 30" barrel. Would be interested in how that would do for long range. Need to get a decent scope for it. It has a burris 4.5-14x42 on it now.

I would be willing to pay and attend the class but my goal is learning to be able to be a better shot. My equipment is primarily for hunting and I do not see myself having a need or desire to shoot past 500 yards. Most of my hunting rifles use 3-9 duplex scopes and many use 2-7 powered scopes. I would find the class room instruction valuable but my equipment is not designed for that distance.

Well I'm also going to be teaching how to set up accurate hand loads. How to mount a scope the correct way. How to make shooting calculations. All of these things apply to all shooting. Not just long range. This class is also for people that want to learn how to hit something at distance in a survival situation you know, as well as I do things aren't good in this country right now We may find ourselves in a situation where we need to hit something really far to save our lives. I definitely think $400 is worth it to spend to have this in your "toolbox". You will definitely learn things that you can apply to hunting. You say you don't wanna shoot past 500 but it would be nice to be able to just in case right? I have seen people take giant bulls at 1600 yards. Effectively. With my rifle setup I wouldn't hesitate for one second to shoot an elk at 1200 yards. It will be no different than me shooting one 200 yards to be honest, Out of 10 times shooting a 10 inch steel plate at 1000 yards ill hit it 9 to 10 times out of 10. Repeatedly is a skill worth knowing.

I agree with the desire to shoot further out but I disagree with the concept that it is hunting at those ranges.

Sorry, I was suggesting rifles with intermediate actions (like Begara B14 HMR) not long actions. For some reason when I recommended those rifle makers, I was thinking of .308 or 6.5CM.

Probably just going to grab some basic 180gr to start shooting it...

You'd have to input the data into a ballistics calculator to see which one would fare better. I'm guessing the heavier bullet will do better farther out ASSuming it's being pushed fast enough.

26" barrel and I'll be putting my Alaskan 360 on it as well..

Do you have a required items list, such as range finder, 120rnds ammo, etc. or a recommended items list such as, 'we will be shooting out of a swamp, so we recommend waders, mosquito repellent, and a Cajun accent?
