I understand that the techniques are the same, and ballistics are ballistics. I was trying to say that the smaller cartridges and the rifles that shoot them are much more common, and that shooting out to applicable effective ranges (even into trans-sonic velosities) for those platforms might fill more classes.

That being said, I would love to try to hit a 2moa target at ELR range with my .308. Unfortunately, I don't have a mortar-style stand to mount my rifle 😁.

Either way, sign me up. I'll bring my AR10. Love to see what it can do. It has a Bartlein barrel too. I'll get a new canted mount for the scope (been wanting an excuse to get one anyway, as I don't have anywhere to shoot past 300 but I wish I did).

I would be willing to pay and attend the class but my goal is learning to be able to be a better shot. My equipment is primarily for hunting and I do not see myself having a need or desire to shoot past 500 yards. Most of my hunting rifles use 3-9 duplex scopes and many use 2-7 powered scopes. I would find the class room instruction valuable but my equipment is not designed for that distance.

I say go for it. I live on the West side of the state, and opportunities for shooting past 100 is hard to find. Even if the range is not practical for your application, might be fun to see yourself taking your rig and reaching out for bubblegum and giggles. In addition, for myself, I hate to turn down the possibility to learn something new...Plus, he says you can shoot a rig designed for those distances; damn me, but I'd like to hit a target at a long range just to see if I could do it.

This sounds like something I would love to do.

Have had basic scopes, but the most I'm using them for is having fun at 50yds with 22lr seeing how accurate I can be with cheap subsonics.

Years ago I did some 400yd shooting with my 308 but I'd love to try and push it too 1000yds and at least know what I'm doing/understand it better.

I do have 1 rifle, single shot bolt action that is larger than 308 that should easily push past 1000+

50bmg from a Noreen ULR50, with rounds over 600gr, it should be heavy enough to carry out...

Probably one of my biggest problems, I like to try and see how far I can go with basic scopes so those are just Vortex Crossfire 2 6-18x44. Also, I'm a poor leaner in a classroom and do better with hands on...

Edit:

From looking through this thread, seems the AR10 is not the best platform, still it would be fun to see how far it can be pushed for what it is...

I do have plans to pickup a bolt 308 but the plan is for a Mossberg MVP Scout to be a light woods rifle... Perhaps I should look for something else, I do like Rugers. The most common grain weigh I use for 308 is 147gr.

What would be a good barrel length to go for, for a 308 rifle... Reason for 308, it's already a caliber I use and is common...

Ultimately, BCI must have a range to shoot far longer than anywhere I know of...the sharing of such sites is a whole other topic...If he has a site to shoot LR, and he is willing to have others make use of that space, I want to shoot it.

Been thinking on LR rimfire for a while. Only, I like reloading as a hobby, and while it is possible to load rimfire, it looks to be a PITA and expensive.

Please let me know below if this is something you guys would be interested in and I will make an effort to get it all set up.
Im thinking about putting together a 2 (possible 3) day workshop to teach ultra-long range shooting. Just curious if this is something anyone would be interested in? This course would be for the novice to intermediate shooter.
What are MY credentials? Well, Im 52 years old and I have been shooting rifles in a long range capacity for over 40 years. Below is a pic of me nicking gophers at 100+ yards with a marlin 30-30 at age 11. And two videos of me shooting 1000+ yards at steel. I have (actively) been at the forefront of modern ultra long range shooting in terms of technique and equipment since the age of 30. Hitting a 24" steel plate at 2300 yards with my custom 300 win mag is pretty standard for me. I can do this due to my 40+ years of shooting experience and 20+ years of research and experience in regards to hand load development, equipment choice and setup, weather and atmospheric readings and shooting technique. I have been asked numerous times by people if I could teach them how to shoot like this. And of course this is not something I could teach in 1 day. So my proposal would be a 2 or 3 day course. 1 or 2 days in a classroom, and 1 whole day out at my 1000 yard+ shooting spot in Tillamook to actually put what you've learned into practice.
WHAT DO YOU NEED?
1.BASIC UNDERSTANDING OF GUN SAFETY
2. A RIFLE OF 308 CALIBER OR LARGER THAT HAS A HALF DECENT TRIGGER SYSTEM, AND A SCOPE WITH AT LEAST A FIXED 10X OR GREATER THAT TRACKS RELIABLY AND HOLDS ZERO.

The course would cover:
Day 1 (possibly 2) classroom - NOT IN THIS PARTICULAR ORDER

1. A brief history of long range rifle application and hard target interdiction.
2. Proper shooting technique (prone with bipod, tripod, and improv bipod).
3. Caliber choice and ballistic characteristics.
4. Hand load development for long range (bullet choice, seating depth, neck tension, powder type and weight, annealing, die choice etc).
5. How to create a shooting calculation using ballistics apps and kestrel weather meter, and also how to create a shooting calculation with just your reticle and simple math.
6. Equipment choice and proper setup for long range and how to get your rig shooting 1/2 MOA or better.
7. Scope type, magnification, and scope choice and how to get the most adjustment from your elevation turret. How to read your reticle (mils and MOA) and use holdover.
8. Using a spotter and shooting without a spotter.
9. Long range shooting application and practicality during domestic wartime or civil unrest. (It's a shame I have to even cover this but I feel due to the current political climate its necessary).
This is going to be a skill set worth knowing if we, God forbid get into a civil unrest situation in this country. As I'm sure some of you know, we are also very close to World War III and it's not that far beyond possibility that we could have boots on the ground here in this country. So just having this in your toolbox is just another thing that's going to enable you to greatly enhanced chances of survival in a situation like that.

Day 2 - AT THE RANGE
A full day of long-range shooting and putting these methods into practice.

PRICE? A course like this would be a fair amount of work to cover comprehensively and do correctly. We are talking 6 to 12 hours of classroom teaching and 8-10 hours of shooting over the course of 2 or 3 days.
I feel $400 per person would be fair. This would include all the days and also my personal cell phone number for students to call at anytime for questions or a refresh. Im a gunsmith and I would be willing to include a full rifle setup as well (basically this would be you coming out to my machine shop and me helping YOU set up your rifle to shoot long range).

I think this price for the amount of work I'd be putting in is more than fair.

I need a min of 12 people to sign up.

I will give one guarantee. That if you take this course and you apply these methods as I've taught them, then you will be able to hit a 10 inch steel plate at 1000 yards 1st or 2nd shot (depending on the accuracy of your rifle of course). This I will promise. If you cant with your rifle you will be able to with my 1/4moa 300 winmag)

I would be interested next spring after the hunting season. Live in western Washington. Would use my 300 win mag or 6.5 PRC.

Get a badger ordinance 30moa rail. That will give you your full turret worth of elevation.

So we are looking at March 15th for class. It's gonna be a long class. Maybe 8 to 10 hours. Then the following Sunday the 23rd for all day at my spot in tillamook shooting. 9am until dusk. We will be out there all day.
If this works for everyone I can start taking payment and book the classroom for the 15th.

I'm in for the class.

@BLUE COLLAR IRONS I suggest you PM each of the members who have expressed interest. I will send you a money order to get the ball rolling. Just know who to make it out to and where to mail it. PM's are good for that.

Dude I encourage you to push forward with this.

If it is successful (or even marginally successful) it could become an Annual Training Class you could conduct.

Just sayin' :)

I have a good friend down in the Lincoln City area with some commercial office spaces. It's probably further than wanted but I could see if he is willing to allow use of an empty space for a class to be held...

It will be worth it to me to hit at 1000. I usually shoot 168gr Hornady HPBTs at around 2450fps in LC brass, but I'll work out a load using heavier bullets like 175gr Sierra Match Kings or Berger VLDs in Lapua (or similar) brass, working to higher velocity. If I have to, I can always adjust the gas block to "off" and shoot single shot.

My rifle is a GA Precision GAP10 with a 11.25:1 Bartlein single point cut barrel, Geissele SSA-E trigger, Atlas bipod, APA lil' bastard brake (or Trash Panda supressor if you don't want the brake on the line), Magpul PRS g2 stock and Vortex Razor HD genll 4.5-27x56 scope with EBR-7C MRAD reticle. Looking on upgrading to Sphur (or similar) scope mount.
