Paris (CNN) -- A French soldier who was stabbed Saturday on the western outskirts of Paris was targeted because of his military service, France's defense minister said.

"The aim was to kill the soldier because he was a soldier," Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian told CNN affiliate BFMTV. The attacker wanted "to kill a soldier who is in charge of French security," he said.

The soldier was stabbed in the neck from behind with either a knife or a box cutter, a Hauts-de-Seine police spokesman said.

The soldier, 23, was hospitalized with non-life-threatening wounds, the Ministry of Defense said in a statement.

The attacker was wearing a robe and appeared to be North African, said Laurent Lefebvre, a spokesman for Syndicat Alliance Police Nationale, a French police union.

Hauts-de-Seine police said they were screening surveillance video.

The soldier was on patrol as part of a heightened security plan initiated in certain areas following France's intervention in Mali earlier this year, French President Francois Hollande said.

The attacker fled, triggering a manhunt, Interior Ministry spokesman Marie Murault said.

The incident occurred late in the afternoon in the La Defense neighborhood as the soldier was on a joint patrol with police, the ministry said.

It comes days after an attack in which a British soldier was hit by a car and hacked to death in southeastern London. Moments later, one of his alleged attackers was filmed saying the soldier was killed "because Muslims are dying daily" and that "we must fight them as they fight us," in an apparent reference to British and allied forces' role in conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.

London might have hosted the Olympic Games, but if you're Joe Average Citizen in the UK, good luck getting a cop to show up in time to help you when your life is at risk...

When slowly integrated and assimilated under a common flag diversity is good! We just marked D-Day and think of how many Americans with German names fought! The universities today don't teach kids to love America and unchecked mass immigration is destroying our culture. These new immigrants aren't encouraged to assimilate or even speak English.
Under these conditions, tensions will erupt. It's too late for Europe as the clash of cultures is too great. Our problems in America pale in comparison.

Negative. I've assimilated just fine, and so have my parents. I love this country and at 30 years of age I regret not joining the military after high school. I strongly disagree that immigrants move here with the intent to change things to the state at which they used to live. They move here for a reason. If anything they look for that silver lining in their lives which is the American dream. I refuse to believe that they are here for any different. Give them a chance and I assure you most are willing to lose life and limb for what this country has to offer. I know I would. If the culture adds to diversity of this nation, great! Boston has Irish, the bayou has French and many more communities have English, Italian and German culture infused with your view of "American" beliefs. Although your post is vague as to whom you are referring to, I know what your assumptions are. Besides, most of the primary language is lost after the first generation of migrating to the U.S..

Look at the big picture buddy, the immigrants are not changing your nation. The politicians are hindering your constitutional rights as an American as we speak. Focus that anger to the "elected" officials. Those people are creating the real changes to your way of life.

I grew up in South Fl. for instance, now in huge parts of Miami Spanish is spoken first. The culture is Cuban. Look at parts of Calif. I'm not seeing assimilation.
Europe has a huge migration from the middle east and N. Africa and it's not working out too good. Too many, Too fast=problems IMHO.

BTW I'm not angry about all this, just making observations. And it's not the elected officials to blame but the voters as well as political correctness making people afraid to speak their mind.

From what I've read certain Indian tribes helped whites destroy other less useful tribes. Also the fur trade, a HUGE part of building wealth in North America depended on Native Americans. Nobody can say how this country would be different without slavery or the Native Americans. What if the Chinese got here ahead of the Euros? Europeans had luck and greed on their side. The history of the U.S. has had many twists and turns to get us here and European DNA and concepts had a good part as well.

Unfortunately we seem to be more divided now than since the Civil War. Too many large groups feeling not part of America, disenfranchised. It's constantly drummed into their heads that past injustices and current bigotry is holding them back.
That border security is code for racism. Universities are preaching guilt and self hate to young whites while glorifying all other cultures. For many reasons our current govt. is promoting this disharmony. Short term the goal is more and more votes for the socialist, globalist lib agenda. Or maybe something else is happening.

Maybe the European descent Americans luck has run out and it's our turn to go the way of the once proud Native American Indian.
