Funny you mention that. I generally plan my driving by using right turns..it's always been a point of disagreement with my wife (she always turns left whenever). But in the situation above, I took the opportunity because the opposing traffic was usually never there.

I'll go back to turning right.

My wife and I rarely ever cede the hill in question, regardless of casualties. And neither of us has admitted to being wrong since the rings went on.

My recollection was also that the person going straight has the right of way. I guess because if you were both going straight, you could go at the same time. But man, when I've been sitting and sitting longer than the other guy, I only concede that right of way to him for the shortest time (nanoseconds) before I'm going for it. I've been flipped off before, no biggie.

This is often what I run into in these situations. Couple drivers sit and stare at each other not sure what to do. I have often had one tell me I was #1 when I would just go ahead. I just laugh and drive on.

Speaking of "courtesy" i often see this locally, people not stopping for pedestrians crossing, even with the yellow flashing warning lights under the yellow diamond signs. In fact, more than a few times children have been struck by inattentave drivers outside of school zones where there are no crossing guards

People VERY often get hit here who are on foot. It is often the drivers fault but, it amazes me how many people on foot stare at that damn phone and just think the whole world will watch out for them. They are literally taking their life in their hands as they walk music in their ears, eyes on the phone. Zero awareness. Put a driver doing the same and them together and we of course know who loses.

Apparently, multiple inattentive drivers have run into pedestrians and bicyclers while their vehicle is making a right hand turn at a red light.
It has resulted in signage on arterials around Seattle that right hand turns are no longer permitted during a red light at that particular intersection. Naturally many drivers simply ignore the sign and turn right on the red light regardless. I witnessed law enforcement pull one over who did it right in front of him a few days ago.

Again two things here. Cops need to give out pricey tickets to drivers who ignore them. Many places have told the Cops don't do it anymore. Given that it's up to those on foot to wake the F up. Don't step into the road assuming cars will stop. Assume they will run you down if you let them.

Ever notice the logarithmic increase of traffic signage when you cross the border from Oregon to Washington (Or Idaho to Washington) ?

My theory is that someone in the legislature has a brother in law in the business. "Road Tits" (the painted yellow concrete "mole mounds" that direct you at the peril of your suspension) are likewise significantly more plentiful, perhaps for the same nepotistic reason.

Passing on the right seems to be the Washington State Sport as well.

Ever notice that BMW drivers feel compelled to tell people they are BMW drivers? (Actually, it is often helpful, because it explains so many other things).

Yielding to the first arrival at the intersection is Courtesy. (NOT the legal Right of Way for obvious reasons: No judge wants to preside over a dispute of who got there first).

Legally, the Right of Way is held by the traffic to your right, regardless of when they arrived (AND stopped). Left turners yield to oncoming thru traffic. Vehicle in the intersection has established their right of way.

I see way more dangerous behavior on our freeways everyday. Tailgating at 75mph+ is normal occurrence. Speeding, that is normal among the vast majority of freeway drivers.

It's my understanding that left turns, unless onto a one way street, do not have right of way ever. You said this was a stop, not an all way stop. Just because it seem right and courteous does not necessarily mean it is legally right. If you two hit each other, somebody would be at fault, neither of you thinking it's themselves. Because you would have needed to cross his lane of travel, there by getting directly in his path by going left but he would not have been getting in yours by going straight, I'm inclined to say he was legally right. But I'd like to see the Oregon law to confirm my suspicions or change my opinion.

I believe Oregon is a yield right of way to avoid an accident state. Meaning if you can yield to prevent an accident, you're legally required to do so.
