OK...so I've been driving for like..almost 40 years.

But maybe I'm just wrong here...

I was turning left into a two way street. I had a stop sign, the cross traffic does not. The opposing side also has a stop sign. I got to the stop sign and waited for about 15 seconds for traffic to clear because I was turning left. A truck then approached opposite me..he also has a stop sign..and was going straight..no turn signal on.

When traffic finally cleared, I went into my left turn. The opposing truck also drove forward. I was a bit ahead of him and kept going. He got all pissy and flipped me off.

Was I in the wrong? Isn't there a courtesy rule? That dude knew I was waiting forever before he even got to the stop sign..

If I'm wrong I'm wrong..help me out here..

I think everyone gets a turn, by when they arrive at the stop sign. the other dude probably had Mr. FENTY as his passenger. I drive exactly as you do. I'm like a gekko, got my eyes working independent of each other watching every other car at the intersection.

Not a question of courtesy...

You got there first and you both had to wait for cross traffic in order to continue...

You had the right of way because you stopped at the intersection first...

Basic driving rules of engagement... you were in the right and he sucks at life...

Glad to hear it wasn't anything more than a finger...

First to stop at the intersection has the right of way.

You were supposed to chase him down, get out of the truck and try to turn it into a physical altercation.

I tend to let the person who is going straight have the "right of way" so to speak and go first in cases like this.
Just 'cause there is no turn signal , don't mean a turn ain't going to happen.

With that said...
I do understand that whoever got to the intersection first is one who should have the right of way.

If the guy comes at your window with a crow bar, aim for the groin.

If you two had met in the middle not sure who if either would have been cited. Good chance LEO's would have called it civil, as in let your insurance work it out. Again though its VERY wise to have a dash cam. They are do damn cheap now everyone should have them. As for "courtesy"? Well sadly not a lot of that going around now days. If this is the worst part of your day? I would call it a good day and move on.

And that's the point of me posting this. I thought it was the first to arrive at the intersection had the right of way, but searching the ODOT manual it seems the person going straight does..

I dunno..

But I was willing to go full Viking on him if he wanted to argue.

Not the worst part of my day for sure.

I just respect the combined intelligence around here..

after i saw your post, i also went to the Oregon dmv manual,, i couldn't find an official answer.. LOL

You're supposed to both wave at each other to go until both of you miss the opportunity to go.

No idea about Oregon but in most states you typically yield to the traffic going straight. This allows both of you to go since you can both enter the intersection at the same time and you can turn behind the other driver.

My recollection was also that the person going straight has the right of way. I guess because if you were both going straight, you could go at the same time. But man, when I've been sitting and sitting longer than the other guy, I only concede that right of way to him for the shortest time (nanoseconds) before I'm going for it. :p I've been flipped off before, no biggie.
