Yeah my Step Dad had a minor bout with shingles and pretty much said if he gets it again he'll end himself it was so bad.
He had the shingles shot but it only lasts so long and you can get it after a while.

I've also had canker sores my whole life. Since I can remember. Now my kids get them and that's what hurts me.

Doctors never knew crap about them, but I did get better info from my dentist.

Alot of it has to do with diet.

Now as an adult I rarely get them.
Canker sores = Herpies simplex!

For clarification:

Cold sore=herpes labialis=herpes virus flair up and generally extra-oral, around the lips in adults. Intra-oral herpetic lesions are relatively uncommon in adults, but not uncommon in children. Gloggle primary herpetic gingivostomatitis.

Canker sore=apthous ulceration=we don't know what the heck causes it.

I'm making a guess that most of you folks are referring to apthous ulcerations.

A light read that may help understand apthous ulcers that I think is close to our current understanding of the problem:

For lightweight and home use a 1:1 ratio of liquid diphenhydramine (an issue in Oregon) and liquid Maalox.

Medium weight is 1:1:1 of the above with the addition of 2% viscous lidocaine (prescription most likely).

For information search "magic mouthwash"

And for the heavy hitters you are looking at steroids. Kenalog in Orabase was what was used when I was a young dentard.

To stay on topic, I'll probably be getting the Shingrix vaccine this year

Unlike cold sores, canker sores don't occur on the external surface of your lips (outside the mouth). "Even though canker sores and cold sores can have the same triggers, canker sores are not contagious," says Dr. Varinthrej Pitis. "There is no virus or bacteria associated with them.Feb 7, 2019

Who knows? I'd just be glad they were gone. This discussion brought back memories from a time I was plagued with canker sores when I was younger. May have been when I was in my early teens, around the time I had a problems with my legs aching and keeping me awake at night? "Growing Pains" were real, but no one mentioned the term at the time. Those both went away. And when I was "blessed" with eczema, or psoriasis, in 8th grade. Went away for years and now it's back.

I'm told the medical practice is part science, part art and part WTF. :)
