Shot the 30.06 M76 today

Took the 30.06 M76 to the range today. Run a hundred or so rounds through it. I'm going to call this acceptable combat DMR accuracy.
100 yards 63 grains of Ramshot Hunter 15o grain Hornady's OAL 3.200" . I MIGHT need to reduce OAL a smidge and mod the gas adjuster to give a wee bit less gas. cycling on 1 but its beating the brass up pretty good.

Couldnt be more pleased with the accuracy. Ive shot Drags that didn't shoot anywhere near as good. Normally with AK's you just kinda gloss over the accuracy bit. I'd put this rifle up against most ( or all ) other AK's and against ALL 30.06 AR-15's. All of them .

Not sure what can be done to an AKs action to lesson the brass beat down. I've seen folks use the soft part of a Velcro sticky on where it makes contact with the dust cover with slight better results.

My M77 doesn't damage the brass at all. This is just an overgas situation. I drilled the hole for the 8mm spec and the 30.06 is a significantly higher pressure round. Better too big that too small because getting the gas block off wouldnt be any fun. . I have a couple of choices. I can get one of those adjustable pistons , I can weld up the hole in the existing gas regulator and drill it smaller or I can drill the gas piston. M76's come with pistons that are drilled through on the end to a gas relieve port on the side. Yeah, Thats what I'll do. Open up that port to the next size and that should do the trick. .

With such a huge variety of 06 ammo "blends" available, I wonder if tuning the rounds is simpler than tuning the rifle.
More than a few makers have offered the Garand spec load for years.
