Don't keep it in a damp basement. Oil it periodically, both the metal, even under the woodline, and the stock itself. After shooting, DO NOT clean the barrel with a steel cleaning rod from the muzzle end.
 
A change in climate will have an effect on the gun.

It should be completely cleaned and oiled when it arrives here.

It may need to be repeated again in a year or less. I don't know why, but I just got done restoring 2 guns fopr a customer that had the same situation. It was a pain in the buttocks.

ETA: I re-read the OP and it may be different fpr old guns. The ones I restored were more modern pistols.
 
Clean it and lube it frequently. I've been all over the US and moved guns with me - no issues. BTW, that's a classic you have - a true heirloom within the family. They don't make 30-40 Krags anymore.
