If the barrel is in its original length...there will be a date and Ordnance mark on the top of the barrel...just before the front sight.

Yep..its been "sporterized"...a common thing in the 50's - 80's.
Not always a bad thing considering the time period and how common former military rifles once were.

I sold one of these rifles to a friend for very little and took him to my range after he put a scope on it. The old war horse shot two touching and the third off an inch or so at 100 yds. He sent me a picture of his bedding work today.

Are you sure on the serial number ?
It looks too high.

" A total of 545,511 were delivered to U.S. Army Ordnance."

The website I looked at stated that serial numbers went up to 646,000. The last rifles produced were dated to 1919.

Hello, New to the forum and hoping someone can help me with a date of manufacture on an M1917. I inherited the gun from my father and my recollection is that it was given to him by my aunt in the late 60's early 70's as a birthday gift. The gun was sort of a "finish it yourself" sporterized...
