I've probably committed a felony or three today. So have you.

You live a more exciting and on the edge life than I do. Based upon common definition of "felonies" I am pretty sure I did not commit a felony today.

Felonies include but are not limited to the following:

I believe once a person pays their debt to society, for non violent felonies, they should be allowed their 2nd amendment rights back.

The term non violent is going to be an exercise in schematics. Child pornography could be termed non violent, but in my opinion you should be summarily executed if convicted anyway, hence, the need to have the right to own a gun as a felon would be moot.

So would you Then please explain what criteria you would use to refuse a person a constitutional right?

Well, the convicted and paroled second degree murderer who obtained a semi automatic pistol, manufactured a silencer and then robbed and did an attempt murder at the business next to the one I worked at after looking me in the eye in the parking lot sure as hell meets it, the a**hole who beat a 2 year old to the hospital meets it, my criteria anyway, may not meet everybody's criteria....

Pickup an arrowhead on federal land? Felony
Have a lobster in your possession that is too small? Felony
Lost and accidentally operate a motor vehicle in a protected wildlife area? Felony
Possession of an Ospray or Eagle feather? Felony.
In some states driving in excess of 25 MPH over the posted speed limit. Felony
In some states, Adultery Felony.
Withdrawing or making deposits less than $10K with the intent to bypass IRS reporting requirements, you guessed it Felony.

And my favorite
Consensual anal sex is a felony in several states

The fact is there are so many laws on the books that you simply cannot help but be on the wrong side of the law from time to time. There is something like 27,000 Federal laws that have been passed.

Well, the convicted and paroled second degree murderer who obtained a semi automatic pistol, manufactured a silencer and then robbed and did an attempt murder.

Exactly. He ignored the stupid law and "obtained" a pistol anyway.

In my mind, the way it should have worked is that after his initial conviction he should have been given a stiff sentence, say 20 years. After he served his entire sentence to the day (no time off for good behavior but time added for bad behavior), he gets released with his full rights restored for a real chance at not being a scumbag. If he goes out and does it again, his sentence should be doubled or he should get the rope. Chimos, rapists 1st degree murderers should get the rope 1st time.

We've tried it the other way and it's not working. I think the recidivism rate would plummet if we tried some kind of system where we give people a real viable chance of turning their lives around instead of having a second class of citizens.

Get caught over 100 mph it is a felony I believe, mandatory trip to jail now... 38 years ago my cars and driving habits would have made me a felon today , hell back in those days they just scratched you a ticket for attempt to elude or conducting speed contest.

Our correctional system is a joke. The "correction" in the correctional system is not to correct the criminal but to correct society by removing the criminal element (Im not just making that up either)

I really think we should have very few laws and very severe penalty's when those laws are broken.

Murder = death upon conviction
rape= castration on conviction
Theft= first offense you loose your non dominant hand, second offense you dominant hand
Violence or assault = Lashes (real ones like they give with a 2" wet bamboo stalk, something around 25 is often fatal)

Real crime should solicit real punishment not a all expenses paid vacation to gladiator school.

This is all fine, except for the very real problem of false conviction.. we've got an imperfect system and wrongful convictions happen very often, given the number of people being pushed through.

Its true, It is a real problem. Thing is it will never happen so I can talk big about what we "should" do.

Crime and punishment is a big part of how well a society functions. A moral and honest society has little need for capital punishment. Its clear so see what life was like in the US in the 1940-1960 VS what its like from 1995-2015. Its clear to see we screwed up big time and each generation seems to be worse. How do we fix it? I dont know but its not by being soft on hard crime or hard on soft crime.

You are pointing out people whom should not be aloud to be part of society as was my point. It is madness to allow such people to go back into society, "forbidding" them the possession and use of firearms is laughable and pointless in this country.
