The Liberal Gun Club Accepts Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom's Proposition 63 Debate Invite
EL CERRITO, October 14, 2016 – On October 6th, Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom issued a public challenge to the head of the National Rifle Association (NRA) to debate Proposition 63, the gun control initiative facing voters this November.
The Liberal Gun Club (LGC) would like to remind Newsom that according to the Washington Post, only about 6% of gun owners belong to the NRA.
"We think that Newsom should know that the NRA is not the sole representative of CA gun owners," said Lara Cullinane Smith, a national spokesperson of the Liberal Gun Club. "Therefore, the LGC graciously accepts Newsom's invitation to debate the merits of Proposition 63."
Proposition 63 has widespread implications not only for millions of California gun owners, but also the state's taxpayers. One thing that the LGC agrees with Newsom is that "voters deserve more substance than a Tweet" on this important issue.
A public debate would also help ensure that this measure is decided by voters, not by special interests. According to official campaign finance reports, the Yes on 63 campaign has out-raised the No on 63 campaign by more than $4,000,000. Half of that disparity comes from just 19 donors.
"Of course," said Smith, "it's possible that this debate invitation was just political grandstanding designed to increase Mr. Newsom's profile by attacking the biggest strawman of this campaign – the NRA. If that's the case, then Mr. Newsom may be reluctant to actually "debate the issues". That would confirm that Proposition 63 is a superficial feel-good initiative designed to use unlimited and unregulated political contributions to raise his profile in preparation for his gubernatorial run, as we have seen in the past from other ambitious California politicians."
