I'm not afraid of rats or mice,
in fact, I think they're rather nice.
But a hippopotamus
could eat the lottamus.

My two favorites Both by Kipling:
Tommy
The Young British Solider
Kinda cheating here ... both are mostly memorized.
Andy
Boom! Took the first part out of my mouth (or finger tips).Roses are red
Violets are blue
Sugar is sweet
And so are you
But the roses are wilted
The Violets are dead
The sugar bowl empty
And so is your head
I also know a Star Wars variation of the first half.
Never a poetry fan, I think it all goes back to my English lit days. Having to recite parts of Beowulf in Old English and Canterbury tales in Middle.
I recognize many poems, but the only ones I can even remotely recite are the nasty ones I learned in the 3rd grade.
My Mom always said my favorite poem was "When I was sick and lie in bed..." I looked it up, and the title is Counterpane, and the word Counterpane is used at the end of the poem. I've heard this poem for years, but never knew what a counterpane was. I looked it up today, and counterpane is the same as bedspread. Why didn't Robert Louis Stevenson say that?
The only poem I can recite:
Gaily bedight,
A gallant knight,
In sunshine and in shadow,
Had journeyed long,
Singing a song,
In search of Eldorado.
But he grew old—
This knight so bold—
And o'er his heart a shadow—
Fell as he found
No spot of ground
That looked like Eldorado.
And, as his strength
Failed him at length,
He met a pilgrim shadow—
'Shadow,' said he,
'Where can it be—
This land of Eldorado?'
'Over the Mountains
Of the Moon,
Down the Valley of the Shadow,
Ride, boldly ride,'
The shade replied,—
'If you seek for Eldorado!'
Poe
Wow. I always thought this poem was created for the movie.
I never cared much for poetry, but I always liked this one.The Village Blacksmith
