I would like to start listening to podcasts while I am exercising (walking). I have an android smart phone but the only apps I have loaded are store and fast food apps. Any podcast fans here that can steer me towards the easiest method to get podcast on my smart phone? I won't have internet access when walking outside so the podcast method I use will need to allow for downloading them prior to leaving the house. I am looking for free access to the podcast.

What do you like?
True Crime has a bunch of channels for example.

Also, a suggestion: Get audiobooks from the Library.

If you download MP3's, get a player where you can control the playback speed. I find I am often at 1.3x speed.
At this point I am just trying to figure out the easiest way to get the podcast on my phone. Do I need to download an app or? Is there one place that has all the podcast listed?

Different podcasts are found on different platforms. Some you can find at websites. Some are on YouTube. If you download Spotify, they have a good selection and are downloadable. I listen to Dan Carlin Hardcore History, Sean Ryan, Joe Rogan, Mike Rowe, Andy Stumpf.

I was thinking it was more centralized like the app stores.

Or, many of your other apps
like iHeartRado https://www.iheart.com/podcast/
Youtube Music

You can also download the MP3 file, often from websites
and play on a generic player - https://www.androidcentral.com/best-music-players-android
I recommend getting one where you can control the playback speed.

Got Prime?

I would NOT have ear plugs in my ears and LISTENING to shows or music IF I was walking all over town or in the boonies.

Maybe on my own land but not all over the place due to situational awareness issues - being cautious.

I would do this on my own land - walking/hiking or mowing the lawn. Been there - done that.

Now, if I had a walking partner with me who had NOTHING in HIS ears to hide sounds... I might consider listening to a talk show or music.

If I was exercising/walking at HOME - indoors/outdoors - I would listen to something.

Can you LISTEN to those shows or music without special ear plugs so that you can actually HEAR other sounds around you?

So if I have a radio outside or don't put plugs in my ears - I can still HEAR a talk show or music YET I am totally AWARE of other noises ALL around me at the same time.

I did this while camping.

I could listen to some shows and be AWARE of my surroundings in remote areas where NO reception would come in unless it was on a podcast and/or coming out of my former old XM (?) original radio before the 2 places merged - XM/Sirius. My unit was portable. Car, truck, or SUV, on a cabin metal porch roof or window sill, on a camper top or window, out in the OPEN, etc.

Ooopppsss!

I just saw where you wrote smart telephone or cellular telephone.

I can't help you there. I do not own a dumb or smart cellular telephone!

I was thinking about other types of listening devices - systems INCLUDING old fashioned tapes of programs put on a transistor radio with a tape or cd system.

Sorry.

I suggest the AUDIO BOOKS (Fiction and non fiction.) and MANY other links including old debates in ALL kinds of subject matters off of your computer however you can get them on your telephone.

Other people explained that far better than I can above!

I listen to many of them online including some religious talk from various people stateside and overseas right OFF of my computer at home. Lap top.

I just push PLAY and if it leads me to another LINK off of my computer however the show is put on there... it works for me 99.9% of the time. But I am NOT talking about cellular telephones.

The LOCAL libraries may have some outstanding choices for you too.

There used to be and still is (?) a public service for blind people. They would send out records, tapes and cds to totally blind or nearly blind people on a regular basis if they signed up for it.

The patient would get an original or copy of a letter from their doctor stating their eye issues/diagnosis and MAIL it in or FAX IT to the .gov agency or FREE CHARITABLE SERVICE PROGRAM.

The patient would have their representative, caregiver, family member or friend CHECK what subject matters interested them.

They had a HUGE LONG LIST of current and older books to choose from. They even provided the record player, tape recorder/player and/or CD player IF the patient did not own such a thing.

Now, YOU may wonder WHY I just put this up here. LOL I LOOKED at those lists when I helped people OVER THE YEARS, back east, and some of those books or subject matters in various forms were REALLY interesting! Some of them even included current talk shows and computers were NOT that popular at the time or in their infancy for HOME USE.

I bet you ten to one that the county/city libraries AND some universities have LINKS online where you can hook this up or PUT IT ON to your cellular telephone.

MY county library has some deal for this too but I have NOT used it since I PREFER REAL PAPER BOOKS or I just make my PRINT REALLY LARGE and read something online that is already there. I did ask them if they could SHOW ME how to do this IF I wanted to do this 'down the road' and they said that they would HELP me too.

Best wishes to you.
