Even during the best of the gold rush times only a very few made a lot of money.

The big majority of people who made money during the gold rush were the merchants who supplied the miners.

I do know one gold story told to me about 40 years ago that still makes sense to me, maybe. An old prospector told me that most of the gold in Gold Hill (between Medford and Grants Pass) wasn't found or mined. He claimed there is a fault and the rich mine hit a sudden dead end so they quit. He told me that someone needs to find out which way that fault slipped and find the rest of (continuation of) that major gold vein. It was really rich.

He might have been right about that. He was right that the mine hit a sudden dead end which gives his theory some credence.
