What I don't get is that in so much of the media / public it's looked on as such a positive thing to "come out" as gay / bi.

Well, I've been completely honest and open about my heterosexual orientation for years, and haven't been given a medal yet.

It's non-news as far as I care....what's interesting and curious is how many news outlets published the story.
