Still on this "blame the youth" horse.
Yep. I hear it EVERY effin' day. And the wife lives it every work day. Lazy punks that won't work. It's not strenuous, it doesn't require any special math skill. All it requires is a, foreign term coming up here maybe. All it requires is a "Work Ethic".

You answered your own question.
Let me ask you why is labor so high in demand from 2 years ago...
With this:
I recently retired (...) our staff was college kids working part time and now it's becoming mostly semi retired or retired folks looking for something to do and play money.

I did early retirement in October of last year
You and 3 million + people retired. That's a lot of back fill.

The other question I have is how did the pandemic make you or any one else more valuable to warrant more money or benefits
The same way it made primers more valuable. Or bullets. Or powder.

There is no set value for things. There is only what the market will tolerate. Labor is a market, just like anything else. And right now? There are more businesses looking for people to do things than there are people who can do them. Simple economics.

You think paying $20/hr for a wet behind the ears kid is bad...try paying a boomer to come out of early retirement and back to the full time job market.

There are around 3 million folks that retire every year thats a small percentage compared to the population so where are a the new folks to take those jobs. Or are they just not willing to do manual labor, might get the hands dirty.

I also said most that of the staff are retired or simi retired so we are still in the work force just not doing that high paying job.

You misunderstood the stat. There were ~3M additional retirees due to covid. There were also ~1M moms who left the workforce and its unknown how many will return.

Retirees at the top of the corporate ladder mean promotions for those just under them. Everyone all the way down gets to take a step up that ladder. Something opens up on the bottom for a new entry level hire. The entry level roles at these organizations are far and away better for one's career than low wage service/hospitality.

It a'int rocket science. If your business isn't attracting employees, change up the offer and/or revisit your criteria for employment. Being salty at "young people" for "a'int got no work ethic" is both misguided and unhelpful for everyone.

Just look at the zombies......
Walking aimlessly staring at a device.
Standing in the middle of an aisle, effectively blocking it, when you need to get by.
Standing in front of you and can't hear you say "Excuse me, sir? You dropped your papers."
Sitting in their car in front of you on the road and when the light turns green they are staring at their device in their lap.

The lights appear to be on, but no one is home. It's everywhere. In the city at least. These days it's got to the point that if I say something to a complete stranger, and they respond with a personality, I feel like I won a little lottery prize! It's become THAT bad!

I ordered from Midway and right away the order was delayed even though it was all said to be in stock.

Guess what UPS says caused the delay?

Summary: Service Alert due to Situation in Eastern China
UPS has temporarily suspended imports into certain areas of eastern China (Shanghai, Jiangsu Province and Zhejiang Province).
UPS continues to closely monitor the situation. For the most up-to-date information on the status of shipments, customers can track a package on UPS.com.

That part is the death of untold numbers. When the cell phone laws first started to be talked about when it came to driving I was skeptical at best. Really thought it was just moron law makers and over reach. Well this one time they were right even if they didn't really know. Love having a smart phone, use the crap out of it. If I am driving its only playing music or telling me how to find the place I am looking for. A lot of these morons can't safely walk across the parking lot with that damn phone. Put them behind the wheel with it and they are more dangerous than most drunks. Its often kind of spooky how it just seems to hypnotize some people.

I ordered 20 Berry's 405 cases from a refutable vendor I've purchased a couple of thousands dollars worth of goods from on May 28/2022. They said possible delayed shipping for 13~23 days. I checked the order status today, since I haven't received it, and now it's 'possible' to get it on the 29th. 32 days from the order date and the cases were in stock? I cancelled the order.
Checked another vendor that has a LOT of retail stores and they refused to send to a PO Box. Another vendor wanted to ship ONLY via FedEx. (read $$ to ship) I even lowered myself to check on amazon, they had 2 boxes, Wow..

What the he!! is up with vendors? Anyone?

Dan
So… a "refutable" or "reputable" vendor?

If anything good came out of this great hoax the dependence on China for EVERYTHING may be one. Not sure as memories tend to be so damn short but, maybe some will finally see how foolish it was to let one country make literally everything we use. Another may show up in the mid terms. One party who got power drunk like they never had before is now desperately trying to hang onto it and it may cause a blow out like no one alive has ever seen.

Your missing my point. Workers have to start somewhere. A 16 YO isn't going to jump into a job doing the above. Your not supposed to get paid a living wage for doing something that doesn't require special skills. There is a starting wage, always has been always...Well maybe not any more. The point is, parents really effed their kids up in this last generation or two. People are supposed to work. Show up every day, and work their way up. I don't understand how people can not work, and expect to have the things that "Work" has brought to people throughout time?
BUT, But, but.......
The Govt handouts/payouts for NOT working is very generous.

Yeah.....the number of people crossing the southern border is proof of the FAILED policy/thinking.

Aloha, Mark

Well it does accomplish what they wanted. Look how many lined up to take that free money when the only "take" was loss of rights. They found out a LOT of people would gladly give up freedom if they got a promise to be taken care of. Socialism is an easy sell at first. There is a reason its always propped up at gun point later. By then its too late for those who thought it was a great idea though :(
