I have a very early Ruger 10/22 in near perfect condition. The metal buttplate is fairly slick and slips on my shoulder. I don't want to modify the buttplate. I want to replace it with a plastic buttplate and spray on a lightly abrasive coating which would approximate a Talon Grips strip. I have tried the Talon Grips strips, which work, but look ugly because they are difficult to cut accurately. I want to spray on, or paint on, a coating covering the entire surface of the buttplate that will do what a Talon Grip patch does. A good tacky rubberized surface would also work. Any suggestions? Thanks.

If it was me I would put a strip of cats tongue tape in long rectangular shape right in the middle of the buttplate, not cut same shape as buttplate.

Spray car undercoating ?

Thanks. Like the bedliner idea... but maybe tricky to get thin enough. Gotta remember the spray car undercoating.

...ilikeguns... Exactly what I have tried and am trying again. First was a small strip of Talon rubber. Not tacky enough. I removed that and have very carefully cut a 1" strip of Talon Pro (pretty much light skateboard tape)... actually got it to look like it wasn't cut by a monkey. I'm going to put that on and will probably stay with that.

I I have an early OEM Ruger 10-22 plastic butt plate that if you wanted to come to Beaverton Oregon, or, were to send me an appropriate size bubble pack or shipping container, self addressed, and stamped, you can have it gratis. you can play with it, and not mess up your original

Be very carful if using bedliner. This precautionary thread " Hootus " may provide an insight to my note of caution. :s0001:

Thanks guys. I appreciate the offers and advice. I may try spraying a plastic buttplate if what I have done doesn't work ok. I applied a 1" x 2" strip of Talon Pro to the upper portion of the plate and it feels like it does the job with a t-shirt on. I was finally able to cut it to look decent with the aid of some metal patterns.

Some type of tape might work, but I'd get some some clear GE 100% silicone sealant and smear it on the buttplate in a few locations (or on the entire thing) and let it dry/cure a day or 2. Says on the tube it will not blemish most metals, but recommends testing on a small discreet area first. You can buy a small 2.8 ounce tube of it, or larger tubes for use in a caulk gun. I think it comes in white, black, and clear colors, maybe others also. I like the clear stuff. I've used it to seal the seams on a sil-nylon tent and it is still flexible 25 years later. Your question reminds me that I have a gun with a slick buttplate that could slip on a hard floor when leaned in the corner. Think I will put some silicone sealant on it to prevent that.
