Mounting a red dot on a pistol

One thing that has puzzled me and that I've been wanting to ask someone is this: when mounting a reflex red dot sight on something like a Ruger Mark III, where should the sight be positioned: toward the rear, the middle or the front of the rail? Or, does it not matter?

What are the advantages or disadvantages of each?

Forward of the ejection port if possible so the brass doesn't hit. I know this can be a nuisance from posts I have read.

So accuracy is unaffected by position? I also talked to a guy yesterday with Army experience that said it is just personal preference as far as how far from your eyes you place it (i.e., on a rifle, specifically). So, cool, then I will leave it where it is!
