The Sig MCX is a unicorn: an AR15 pattern rifle with a piston system that makes god cry. Is is beauty incarnate, and it is mine.

File_000.jpeg

It is also heavy as fuuuuu-

The gun weighs in at 7.9lbs in the nude. Damn, that's a heavy 16" 5.56 carbine. I know I know, "the MCX is a piston gun! It's not going to be lightweight! If you want light, get a WWSD rifle!"

So now that I took the complaint wind out of your sails, lets get down to the task at hand.

I'm figuring out how to put this gun on a diet. I'd like to get the baseweight at or under 7lbs. Here is my list of current stock pieces on the gun, with weights pulled from my kitchen scale, and suggested replacements to get the weight down. If there are any other modifications to stock pieces (outside of replacing the barrel) to reduce weight I'm all ears.

Sig MCX virtus patrol base weight: 7.9lbs
MOE SL-K stock weight: 11.99oz w/o M1913 swivel mount
Lightest stock: PMM Ulralight Skeleton stock 5.1oz
https://www.parkermountainmachine.com/product/pmm-kate-moss-style-stock/ 6.7oz
https://www.parkermountainmachine.com/product/pmm-ultra-light-skeleton-stock/ 5.1oz
https://www.parkermountainmachine.com/product/pmm-trongle-stonk/ no weight listed, contacted PMM
Handguard 16" DMR: 13.33oz
Lightest reasonably long handguard: MI 12.5" handguard 8.7oz
https://www.midwestindustriesinc.com/MI-MCX-Virtus-12-5-Handguard-M-LOK-Compatible-p/mi-mcxv12.5.htm 8.7oz
https://www.midwestindustriesinc.com/MI-MCX-Virtus-10-5-Handguard-M-LOK-Compatible-p/mi-mcxv10.5.htm 7.2oz if I want to go for an even lighter and shorter handguard.
Checking in on lancer CF handguards, looking at 10.5 and 12.5" handguards.
https://www.midwestgunworks.com/page/mgwi/prod/lch-mcx-12 6.4oz
https://www.midwestgunworks.com/page/mgwi/prod/lch-mcx-10-5 5.6oz

If you go for the lightest solution possible i.e. the 5.6oz 10.5" lancer CF handguard and the PMM 5.1oz Ultralight Skeleton Stock your base rifle weight comes out to 6.98lbs, just under the target weight of 7lbs. You shed a pound in the process.

That's still about 4/5's of a lb heavier than my 16" Aero Precision, which includes Magpul BUIS sights, 15" handguard, adjustable LOP MFT stock, and an extra qd swivel point. And it will cost you an additional MSRP $479.00. Oof.

To economize weight, I'm also trying to add on lighterweight upgrades. There are some things that I have that I am committed to using on the rifle, like the Rein 1.0. However, where I can save weight at a fair price I will do so, like looking at lightweight sling options.

Sling: Current is magpul MS3. No weight on it yet
Suggested: Viking Tactcal Ultralight sling no weight listed, need to contact
https://www.vikingtactics.com/product-p/vtac-mk6-mb.htm
Light: Cloud defensive Rein 8.64oz with switch and angled MLok mount. May need different mounting solution.
Current optic: Vortex Strike Eagle SFP 1-8 LPVO plus Vortex mount and throw lever: 24.27oz (OOOOOOF)
Suggested: Trijicon RMR06, which I currently have in inventory. 1.2oz Need a mount for it, plus ADM QD riser 2.8oz = 4oz total.
Suggested: Romeo 5 red dot, which I have in inventory. 5.1oz.

Beyond that I have no plans for additions to the rifle. I might want to add some QD points but don't have the need right now.

If you all have suggestions for how I can lighten the load on this rifle beyond what I have listed here, I'd love to hear it. I know a shorter barrel length will help, I could snag the pencil barrel for the original MCX but that's a huge expense and those have suffered accuracy issues. I may go for a shorter barrel length if I decide to SBR this rifle, for now it stays with the current barrel length.

Ideally, I'd like to stick with an LPVO. If someone has a suggestion for a lighterweight LPVO + mounting solution I'd be excited to hear about that. A magnifier would also be a good addition if I decide to run a red dot, but even that is considerably heavier (looking at you, Juliet 3 Micro 9.9oz magnifier). I wear glasses so typically need a longer eye relief, but the Primary Arms SL3x Prism scope, a ultralight prism scope at 7.95ozs, is also something I'm looking at.

Looking forward to feedback,
Tacticool Hippy

Sorry. I don't understand why you bought the $1800 "beautiful" Sig if you're only going to remove all the beautiful parts. Is this an exercise to show how much money you can blow on customizing a firearm? Because you are certainly going to lighten your wallet a lot faster than you will the rifle. Frankly, if the 1 pound of extra weight on that Sig is that much of an issue, I think you would be better served by spending all that accessory money on a gym membership.

If you were shedding many pounds from the gross weight of the rifle, it might make sense, but as mentioned by others, the weight loss is minimal for the $$$- Unless you literally going to run a marathon with it slung, maybe keep the Sig as is and put the money towards other rifle options-

Yeah, do a dedicated light weight build if that is what is desired, this is like buying a truck as a commuter car and then trying to save money on gas.

More of an exercise to see what's possible, less of an exercise I'm going to follow through on.

Hey I got my kettlebell right here! 😆

Sell it and use the funds to build a light weight gas impingement SBR. Problem solved. Or lift more weights….. haha.

This seems like a good time to reevaluate life choices. Build a dedicated lightweight rifle where you squeeze every ounce you can, leave the MCX as intended.
