If this mayhem ended today it would be a decade before downtown recovers from this.

As for le I'm Oregon it will be years before they recover from Portland's stupidity. It would be wise to prepare for 4+ years of increased crime rates at every metric.

I think the Portland insurrectionists will be pulling a page from the Sinn Féin/IRA playbook before long.
I don't think the sabotage and bombings will carry on for as long as the IRA's campaign did, or kill as many people (about 1800 over 20-something yrs), but it's the kind of asymmetric warfare that appeals to fringe-y types with vary little public support.

Stay safe.

Literally, all of the family I had that lived there left, passed away, or left then passed away. The future doesn't look good for PDX.

I just got back from traveling around the southern coast and places in between. Some of the small towns are exactly like I remember from decades ago, others a little different, some a lot. The country is absolutely breathtakingly beautiful and fills my heart with joy to explore the forests, dunes, seashore, et al. A day spent hiking in those environs strengthens the body, clears the mind, and makes the soul sing. (Though it can also provide a less than subtle reminder that one is not as young as they used to be. :p) The natural beauty makes it even more said this state has gotten so screwed up by the nonsense out of Salem. :(

Yep, the progressive elected officials sprayed weed killer on the Rose City. Homelessness out of control, feces and urine on the sidewalks, violent riots in the streets, disband the police, revolving door for those arrested, shootings increasing. Who would want to go downtown?

The small business's downtown were already hurting due to Covid and when you add in violent riots keeping customers away, they will most end up closing for good.

Also, many of the workers who were sent home to work due to covid will remain at home. When business's learn that they can operate with 1/4 of the office space with remote workers, they will take advantage of the savings. There won't be the downtown workers to support the small business's. The many Vancover residents who worked in Portland will work from home and stop paying the OR income tax.

Oregon is going to take a huge financial hit with the loss of revenue from closed business's and out of work individuals. Who is going to pay for all the progressive socialist programs? You and I with tax increases.

We are going to join the other large liberal/progressive cities that are going bankrupt.

Yup, the telecommuting thing is likely to remain significant after the CCP virus passes.
REI just completed their new campus in Bellevue, only to put it up for sale before moving in. They said they'll just permanently allow their employees to telecommute, and even keep them employed if they are out of state.

I'd love to live in the sticks of Idaho and get paid Seattle wages!

That's precisely what I am working towards. These past 5 months have amply demonstrated to my organization that almost all of us can effectively and efficiently work from home. We are considering a 50% reduction in office space when we finally go back to the office. I have already put in for continuing to work from home. It's 95% likely that they will say "go for it." All I will need is an 11" x 17" printer/scanner/copier.

That sets me up for a move to Idaho within the next 3-4 years, where I will continue to work from my new home, until I retire.
After I retire, I'll likely hang out my shingle for expert witnessing, which can be done from anywhere with a cellular and internet connection.
All travel, lodging, meals, in addition to the case prep time and court appearances, are paid for by the hiring attorney.
I can choose which cases I want to work, and on which ones I can pass. Unless my retirement funds really blow apart, I really won't even need the money.
Just something to do to keep the old noggin sharp and a reason to get out of bed every so often... What's not to like?
