I have Lee TL401-175TC boolits cast with range scrap and 4% tin sodar, then powder coated, sized to .401, they weigh c.180gr. And I have a lot of HS6, and a few other powders. I don't have a chronograph. I need to come up with a load around 800fps that works the slide on a 1911 and hits what you aim at. Thought?

I suppose you could use Trailboss and change springs, but why would you want to neuter a 10 mm down to less than 40S&W specs, better to start with a lesser caliber/gun. The 10mm was designed to shoot a 180gr bullet at 1300 fps. 40 S&W shoots the same 180gr bullet at about 1000fps, 9mm shoots a 147 gr bullet at about 850 fps.

New toy, new range limits for practice. The point of reloading is to download for practice and upload for the field. I have a 14lb. spring for it, so just a matter of finding the download that still actually exit the barrel and hits what you aim at.

800fps is pretty soft. I helped my brother in law work up some loads for a G20. The practice load we settled on was a Lee 175gr bullet at 950fps. It cycled the gun fine and shot well, dumping the brass out just a few feet away. I think we used a light charge of HP38 as I recall.

I know that probably doesn't help a whole lot since you have a different gun with a different spring.

I get the concept, my 10mm target loads are an 180 gr bullet at about 1100 fps while my full house loads are 1300 fps. Since this is a 1911, can you just get a 45 auto barrel and magazine and shoot 230 Rn's?

I cast & coat Lee's 401-175 as well, great bullet!

My HS-6 data starts at 8.9gr, and produced 1,115 fps out of a 5.15" barrel. QL for that charge predicted 1,190 @ 30.7K.

For 800 fps at an OAL of 1.250 QL thinks you'll need a charge of 5.8gr, for a predicted pressure of 11.7K.

QL is a model and has the potential to be in gross error. That said, I wouldn't use HS-6 down that low - for bunny farts I'd look at a much faster powder.

My own records, using 401-175 @ 1.250:

Clays 4.2gr, 925 fps
700X 5.4gr, 1,017
Titegroup 5.4gr, 1,043

These were VERY light loads that barely cycled (Clays didn't) a G20. Personally I'd look at HP-38 / 231, PP, or WSF (5.9gr = 942fps) for loads in the 1,000fps range.
