I had a, "Tower Flintlock" pistol. .70 cal. When I tried shooting a lead ball in it, the recoil threw the ram rod about 10 feet and damned near broke my wrist.

After that, I found a patched glass marble was just the right size for the bore and about as much recoil as my .38spl.

Then it was fun to shoot.
