This is ferrous, all rusted except for the very tip on the nose. It was found alongside the street/road in the town of Estes Park, Colorado.

Didn't see anything referencing 5". Looked like centimeters to me. About an inch and a half would be about right for a field tip.

Looks like some of the Morse taper or possibly a plumb bob. It is 4 inches long. Doesn't appear to have any moving parts like a drill chuck. Base has a retaining ring. Thanks for all the suggestions.

I'm sticking with the Live center the only thing is the pointy end ain't pointy. But then again maybe that's why it was tossed out?
