This is what cocobolo looks like, it is a very red looking wood and it is also called iron wood because it feels hard as steel. I'm not sure what you've got without looking into, which I don't have time for at the moment but If I had to guess I'd start with French Walnut.

Spalted Maple comes pretty close--and there is a LOT of variety in it.

Yep Spalted Maple, or similar light colored wood with a fungus decaying the soft bits (the black 'spalted' parts).

If they are from the west I would say Buckeye. Its a multi colored hard wood. With brown, grey and white splotches. DR
