I was wrong about the Sig P320

I saw a recent YT video of a guy showing that the "partially" cocked striker of a Glock can indeed ignite the primer.

This is my understanding of any striker fired gun.

Except that unlike a Glock, a 1911 has a fully charged spring ready to send the firing pin forward with sufficient force to ignite the primer.

Sure does! That's why ya use the thumb safety.
JB originally designed the gun without the thumb safety, relying solely on the grip safety. I'm good with both of them, but not the firing pin safety. That one can cause trouble.

That's right.
Glock is 70% charged when in battery and has been shown to be able to ignite a primer at that rate.

Agreed.

Although the last 30% requires a longer trigger press to completely cock and release the striker. Which in my opinion helps to negate the NDs/ADs. That along with the trigger safety it is mechanically safer when factoring in the human error/element than the P320.

In the 70% position the sear tabs are on a shelf and cannot be lowered without a trigger pull.
Im sure 70% of the striker spring rate would probably off a round but the sear isnt coming off that shelf on its own.

Right.
And you've got the striker block that would have to fail.
I was simply addressing the free pass that folks like to give Glock because of the idea that a 70% charge won't ignite a primer.
"Free pass" meaning another perceived layer of safety.
And then you can debate hard cup primers vs soft primers - it never ends.

I used to be one who thought that. This whole P320 debacle and my own research has really opened my eyes to the striker fired platform. A lot of myths out there.

I do like the striker block much better than the lever in the P320. But like you said, the striker is cocked enough after racking the slide to ignite a primer.

4.5 pounds is 4.5 pounds. I'll concede that there is a fraction of an inch more travel in the trigger, but the amount of force on a finger, stick, or other foreign object is the same. There is a study that showed a correlation between lighter trigger pull weights and NDs. Not really a surprise.

Apparently another discharge at a USPSA range. No weapon mounted light on the P320. Gun was made ready and holstered and while her hands were in the air the pistol discharged. I'll be interested to hear more.

Just making a thread to say I was wrong. I didn't think what SIG was claiming was possible. So after having a P320 given to me for free I acquired a Streamlight TLR-1 and a 6000 series duty holster made by Safariland (the same one in the Montville Police video). Well with everything put together I can easily recreate every scenario caught on body cam. Whether it be a handcuff key, a seatbelt latch or the ratcheting portion of the handcuffs.

I now believe that the P320 isn't just going off in the holster. The trigger is being pressed by something. With that said I still stand by my opinion that the way the platform is set up I don't think it should be carried in a duty role, nor do I think it's a safe duty gun. Especially in a light bearing holster. The trigger is way too easy to access and manipulate. The travel is too short and the pull is too light.

For competitive shooting or a flat range I think it's fine. Where elements are completely controlled. I'd even say that it would be safe to EDC (WITHOUT a light) in a quality holster. But in a role where it will be going in and out of the holster and outside elements can easily make their way into the holster due to the demands of the job I think it's unsafe. I may change my mind if it had a manual safety or a tabbed trigger. I actually have a tabbed trigger on the way so I can do the same tests and see the difference. Because without the tabbed trigger or manual safety it is extremely easy to manipulate the trigger. In fact it's kind of alarming. I definitely wouldn't want that kind of access going hands on with people as a LEO.

This isn't a post about SIG as a company or how they've conducted themselves. I still have strong opinions on that. But I do want to clean the slate and say from what I can tell I am wrong about the P320 as a mechanical device. I don't think it's the right tool for the job but the gun itself is safe in my opinion.

I've been a troll with this entire situation. And I was wrong. @sobo @DirectDrive @Old Dog @WillametteWill this is me eating my words. Ya'll were right.
