If we're going to be completely honest, my preferred method of reloading a 1911 from slide lock is to seat the fresh mag so aggressively that the slide closes on it's own. This of course causes me to have to decide whether to attempt pulling the trigger on a pistol which may be a. Loaded b. Almost loaded but out of battery c. Empty chamber over loaded magazine
If I decide not to pull the trigger then I can cycle the slide, which generally results in a perfectly good live round plopping in the dirt somewhere behind me.
Of course, I'm no mall ninja operator. So your experiences may differ.

It is a durable consumable, you have enough when you run out of storage space, not before. There is no such thing as "excessive."

You obviously don't reload, but I'll try to clear something up for you.

One may reload for many calibers and use a different powder for each, therefore exceeding your '1 or 2 pound' excess.
