I started to say, "I think Richard Gere has a home there" but, wasn't sure how many would get the reference! 🤣
 
He don't know either. He's just repeating what he heard.

Not unlike my own name. I say it how my Dad said it, but before Ellis Island, it was very possibly not only pronounced different, but was likely a completely different name.

Now how 'bout Garand? It's unlikely that 10% of knowledgeable shooters pronounce it correctly. So, the incorrect pronunciation has become the norm.

People mispronounce my family name all the time. Some will even try correcting me , after I've corrected them.

OK, ok ... her is a legitimate and substantive contribution to the thread.

How about "Leupold" optics.

I used to pronounce it - leo - pold. "Leo" like in Leonardo Dicaprio.

But I believe the correct pronunciation is lou - pold. "Lou" like in Lou Diamond Phillips.

I pronounced it lee uh pold until I heard how Leupold pronounces it in their commercials. Then I pronounced it lee uh pold. I guess I'm somewhat resistant to change.
 
In Adelaide there is an Africaine Road, named after the first settler's ship to land in South Australia. The GPS in one of the cars we rented pronounced it "a freakin'" as in "Turn right on a freakin' road." Made us laugh every time.
 
In the south I often heard Reese's Peanut Butter pronounces "Rees-ees". Irritated me a little but I assumed it was a local thing, big deal.

Then I heard a podcast where they asked how do you pronounce Hoppe's #9. They called up the company and the lady with southern accent who answered said, "You put hops in your beer and you put Hop-ees in your gun!"

Oof.
 
How 'bout Gervais ? The locals say Jur Viss, but in French it should be Jur Vay.

Americans take the easy route. If they can't read it, they just make something up. Eventually it sticks.
That reminds me... Kansas is said Kansas and Arkansas is said Arkansaw. One is an American English pronunciation, while the other is French.
