Not unlike my own name. I say it how my Dad said it, but before Ellis Island, it was very possibly not only pronounced different, but was likely a completely different name.

Now how 'bout Garand? It's unlikely that 10% of knowledgeable shooters pronounce it correctly. So, the incorrect pronunciation has become the norm.

How 'bout Gervais ? The locals say Jur Viss, but in French it should be Jur Vay.

Americans take the easy route. If they can't read it, they just make something up. Eventually it sticks.

OK, ok ... her is a legitimate and substantive contribution to the thread.

How about "Leupold" optics.

I used to pronounce it - leo - pold. "Leo" like in Leonardo Dicaprio.

But I believe the correct pronunciation is lou - pold. "Lou" like in Lou Diamond Phillips.
