I just bought a Mitchell's Yugo M48 Mauser and I can't figure out how to get the cleaning rod out? Theres probably a simple answer but its beyond me. Do I just pull really hard? I don't see any release nearby.

    I believe it unscrews.

I unscrewed it and ended up with a piece about 12" long threaded on the end? I wonder where the rest is?

The rifle was intended to be cleaned by groups of three or more soldiers sharing the cleaning rod sections.

Interesting side note, the US had vast resources so conservation was not a big thing. This was not so with other countries. Just like the cleaning rods, look a machine gun belts. A lot of countries they were designed to be reused.
