I borrowed the kids Bissel machine, only to find that the motor driving the brushes is broken.

Thinking of getting one myself.

Recommendations for/against brands and models?

This is mostly for stain removal - things spilled or tracked in, accidents, etc. - some of the stains are hard to remove.

I have a hoover powerdash pet model. For my uses, it did really well getting stains and whatnot out. I will say it wasnt sucking up the pet hair very well, but it did lift it up decently. Just had to pick some of it up by hand. They might make a non pet model if you dont have animals.

I don't have pets, at least for now. In the future I might, but if I do the only place I will have carpets will be in the bedrooms - which is what I mostly have now. Hard floors are much easier to deal with.

Very true. Only room with carpet other than an area rug in my house is my bedroom. This machine did pretty well for me. Definitely not paid professional job quality, but good forba vaccum sized machine imho
