I think so far the op has gotten good information. If you are off grid, then you do not need expensive utility swithers, but if you are on the grid with this system, you will have to get it done right.
As others have said, batteries are very important, and expensive, as well, as they DO have a shelf life. they will die.
I hear that Tesla is making batteries for home solar systems, that are very highly regarded. I use 6V deep cycle units, but in order for me to run even the simplest system, you will need several. at 60 ish buck a piece it will add up quick.
