This bar was first (in the 19th Century) located in Chinatown, in the older part of Portland. It was a run by a Chinese man who did not speak English. At one point, he hired a local Oregonian signmaker to paint him a a sign. He provided the artist with the Chinese characters he wanted on the sign, but in communicating to the signmaker what the English translation should be, he could not be understood. What he did accomplish was to communicate that he wanted the sign to be very close to eye level. Thus the signmaker interpreted the English translation to be "Hung Far Low."

One of my college classmates could not find other work upon graduation, and ended up as a barmaid at HFL. In those days it was still in Chinatown, North of downtown.
