"It is easy in the world to live after the world's opinion; it is easy in solitude to live after our own; but the great man is he who in the midst of the crowd keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude." - Emerson's essay "Self Reliance"

That made a for a great .wav file to play when my 56k modem didn't connect, back in the day.
Ah, those were the days... The dial-up tones, watching pics load one line of pixels at a time, waiting hours to download basic games or short video clips, windows ran with only a handful of background processes...

Fond memories alright. I well remember one time formatted a laptop to give it away. We had two phone lines by then. The job took just over 24 hours to complete the re load of the OS and all the updates. So I would let it run while we were not home or sleeping till it was done. 🤬

...losing the porn pics you just spent 3.5 hours downloading because someone picked up the phone extension in the other room during the final 60 seconds...

Mike O'Brion was a true Cowboy from back in the day. Born in 1878, by the time I was 9 years old, he taught me almost everything I needed to know about horses.

...and women,

...and kids,

...and dogs.

Conveniently packaged in one quotation I recall every single time I am dealing with any of those 4:

Said Mike,

"Horses, Women, Kids and Dogs: they all understand only two things: Pleasure and Pain.

...and they understand Pain five times faster than Pleasure."

Mike O'Brion, Winnemucca Nevada. 1878-1964
