The .270 Win beats the 7mm-08 in every metric. The rifle itself may weigh fractionally more, but the extra bit of performance is worth those couple of ounces.

Except when it comes to fitting in a short action.

I don't know what it is about those guns, but Mauser's are always some of the most beautiful rifles in the world.

Well. I'fn you're not tall and don't have long arms, little-er guns fit best.
I have great respect for the 270, but it's not available in a rifle that fits my wife. The 7mm-08 is.

The last time I had DREAMS of hunting (deer and elk sized creatures). I actually bought two used .30-06 bolt action sporterized Mauser rifles. Cough, cough......

Yeah......I never got around to actually hunting with them. But it was a nice dream.

I mean like, "What has Bambi ever done to me?"

Shoot what makes you happy. Performance will be too similar and doesn't warrant the stress. However, my vote always goes with logistics.

Some fall when hit, others run a short or long distance. That's what happens when you don't yell out the name of your cartridge just before shooting, so the game doesn't have to guess how far to run before dying.

It is generally an unwritten rule in Alaska that back-country cabins NOT be entirely secured against the chance a person in trouble in the wild may need access. Along with that rule is an understanding that provisions, etc. contained inside would be expected to be utilized and, if possible, replaced with that carried by the visitor. (Box of shells for a can of beans, etc.)

My brother lived the last 30 years of his life up there. When I would come up to hunt (sometimes with 2 or 3 others), I would bring him a gun in exchange for all he did for us (base camp at his house, arranging bush pilots, etc.).

He'd hunted everything up there with a Remington 760 pump in .308 he'd arrived with. It worked well (even on the big stuff), but over the course of a few years, I "fished around" in conversations to determine what he would opt for in the best of all worlds. (I envisioned .338's, etc.)

Based on those fishing expeditions, for a Sheep trip, I brought him up a Winchester Model 70 Classic Stainless (controlled feed action), 24" barrel, Leupold 1.5-5x.

Caliber? I'll let him answer for that:

"Thirty Aught Six. Because If I'm in trouble, I can break into any cabin in Alaska and have a damned good chance of finding some ammo."

Ain't one of these a bad pick. Put the ">" anywhere in this equation based on preference.

Reloaders need not fear that and I've always brought more ammo than needed when hunting. It's true, though that it's not always easy to find, even to the point that it's wildcat offspring, the 280 AI, is easier to find.

BTW, the 280 AI is my choice of the three.
