I am pretty sure the atomic bombings saved one life.

My father was USMC infantry on Guam stacking supplies to be in the first waves of the invasion of Japan.
My mother was a kid scrounging for food between B-29 raids in Tokyo.
One way or the other, my odds would not have been good if that war had not ended early.
Almost total destruction of one's country seems to reinforce the notion of "You started it, you lost, Don't do it again..." Something we could use today. Haji doesn't fight very well but he never really gives up either...
