Yeah I mean, Im sure there's some truth to that but I bet it's mostly just shop talk. I personally think someone would have to be oblivious to think that they aren't already adding to some micro registry every time they fill out a 4473. I'd get not going for a UPIN if you'd only ever done handshake deals, never filled out a 4473 or a Form 1 or Form 4, and never applied for a CPL in your state. But if your name is already on government paperwork forms I don't see an issue. That information definitely doesn't just vanish into thin air after they run you.

For me, I got the UPIN to avoid having to wait until the 3, 5, or 10 day (depending on dealer) hold before they can release it with no answer from NICS.

As a guy with a dozen registered NFA items I guess I'm not too worried about having a UPIN.
I don't even like the whole credit score game.
So I wasn't volunteering to be on yet another database.
We've all made multiple lists at this point anyway.

One of the stories I remember was that if I got a UPIN , my home was subject to search at any time for inventory of all firearms purchased using the number.
Seems pretty far fetched. Then again, that guy from Arkansas ( Clinton airport) probably didn't think he'd die full of Fed bullets in his own house. I wonder how his family's doing right now?

You would think that the more lists you are on the easier it would be to identify you as only the one and true you. But nope, The Great Scrutinizer doesn't work that way.

I just filled out a 4473 22 minutes ago and got instant, no SSN used. Doesn't seem required to me.
SSN is helpful is all.

Especially for folks with more common names (Smith, Jones etc etc etc) OR with folks who have names of folks who have criminal records & such…(cousins with similar names etc).

Our name is incredibly uncommon, so no issues there for us…

Yeah very true!!!

Haha yeah I've heard that never about the UPIN but I've heard it about once you get a tax stamp you're always subject so search.

Both are untrue btw, but it's funny how far rumors can spread.

The ATF can ask to see any firearm purchases via 4473, or information regarding whom it was sold to.

No UPIN required.

They can't blanket search for firearms without cause, perhaps FFL's tho…

This has long been my way of looking at this. Bought a ton of guns over the years were Feds and state were told. Owned some NFA stuff at one time. Long had a carry permit, so adding my SS # to the next form to me is a nothing burger. I have to be on every database they have ever made by now. :s0140:

I went to buy a repop Winchester model 1885 single shot rifle with a 32" barrel. Got delayed finally told it was due to a driving while suspended arrest back in 1981 that they could not tell if it was a felony. Now I've had a CPL since 1991 bought a freaking pickup truck load of handgun and rifles since I started in 1980. And bought a handgun not 6 months before with a 5min BGC in Oregon. It went on for 59 days I finally after hiring a lawyer to triple check my record I called Rick Lewis my state rep. And he made a call and then 4 hours later OSP called me tell me it was all cleared up it was their fault not recording something and to head to the dealer fill out a new 4473 and it would be approved immediately I did it was. Had I not got Rick Lewis involved no idea if they ever would have figured it out.

In my case, "yes." This was the scenario, since WA State Police went to SAFE background database instead of NICS (which sounds like it was cumbersome) I ran my rap sheet yesterday and I do see a duplicate of my name and birthdate which immediately sends a red flag/denied. I'm currently going to fix that this week and send in fingerprints and also get a UPIN from the FBI because it helps my identity.
Interesting story. You may not be finished. Be sure (possibly with an attorney's help) to confirm your association is removed from the other state records to mentioned in the post.

I'm pretty confused right now, here's the situation. I had a Palmetto State Armory Dagger frame sent to my FFL of choice 3 weeks ago, which I've purchased firearms and transfers from in the last year. Most recent one was in July. Anyway waited for the 10 day waiting period, and I get a call yesterday (10th business day) from WA police records stating the background check from my FFL was denied! Apparently theirs a process in which the WA State Patrol sends over this information to my local WA police records which I have a CPL with (over a year) and the clerk stated everything is fine with my CPL and definitely file an appeal form with the appropriate information.
I was dumb founded! I've passed back ground checks for purchases this last year with no issues and I did not break any of the gun control act (title 18) section.
The clerk suggested since I have a common name it may of red flagged the BGC. I find this very odd.

Anyone have insight on this? If you had Appealed and approved your firearm purchase?

This is stressing me out since if it comes back again denied from their investigation your name is put on a denied list for 6 years!
Its been 2 years, and they still haven't made a decision. Said they needed more thumb prints,so i sent in 10 sets prints still not good enough.
