My latest purchase took exactly 7 days to clear. I have a unique name and purchased numerous NFA weapons. I even work part time for the state and passed a background check for them.

It makes no sense to me.

It's not that its taking 7 days to clear. It's taking that amount of time for a State employee to look at the application. The OSP FICS unit is just a bureaucratic middle man. The dealer submits the background request through the FICS portal to OSP. OSP then submits the info to NICS and whatever other databases they search.

The OSP computer will respond with Approved if you are one of the people the State has deemed worthy of an instant approval and from what I understand talking to a OSP employee in the FICS unit a person never sees the application.

If you are one of the people not instantly approved the computer will respond with Pend/Delay and someone at OSP will have to manually to the background check. Empirically I've noted that OSP typically clears around 300 to 400 backround check requests a day depending on how they are staffed.

If a dealer calls in a background check request then that jumps to the front of the line but not many dealers are willing to wait on hold for the 3 to 4 hours per call for OSP to answer the phone. And then you have to be on hold for another 4 hours because the State will only deal with one request per phonecall.
