I will be interested in following any updates that you may provide.

I suspect that there's nothing in the law that allows you to recover, at very least, your expenses for correcting THEIR mistake.

I know I'm preaching to the choir here but denying a law abiding citizen their Second Amendment right is a clear civil rights violation. Civil rights violations used to mean something.

I have a dream that we, as gun owners, won't have to sit at the back of the bus

They process approvals on a regular basis without SSNs. In some cases where identities get confused because of name and DOB commonality, it can prevent a false positive.
In my case, "yes." This was the scenario, since WA State Police went to SAFE background database instead of NICS (which sounds like it was cumbersome) I ran my rap sheet yesterday and I do see a duplicate of my name and birthdate which immediately sends a red flag/denied. I'm currently going to fix that this week and send in fingerprints and also get a UPIN from the FBI because it helps my identity.

Now I know it's mandatory for me!
I've been using mine since my very first "transfer " back around 90/91.
I still get delayed almost every time.
The one incident where I was denied never did have a stated reason for the denial. I went through the massive hassle of appealing, and at the end it was a waste of time and money. Some stress too .
Whatever I paid to have my prints done and a little postage, so not a lot of money. But it's the fact that I got no answer as to why that was infuriating.

I just filled out a 4473 22 minutes ago and got instant, no SSN used. Doesn't seem required to me
Agree I never used my social and all mine have been instants (except one where employee hand entered it and screwed it up). Last instant was couple weeks ago.

interesting. WSP may be more responsive on follow ups for appeals today. It really was a stressful 24 hours, I purchased parts to build my Full-size dagger (a couple barrels, and mag extensions etc) thinking I would have to return the parts or sell them was upsetting. Also the fact your name is on a Denied firearms list for 6 years can put you on the radar which no one wants to be on.
Here are few pics last night on different slides I got for the frame.

I have people ask me frequently where I work if it "helps" to put the social security number down on the 4473. I will have a better answer for them now. I would never have said 20 years ago my name was common, but when one googles ones self or does a facebook search for either my first or middle name and last name a surprising number of duplicates come up. People get nervous about he SS number and I don't blame them, but it is another identifier.

Did you end up getting a UPIN as a result of your appeal? Mine has definitely helped with my erroneous delays. It's not a sure thing guarantee, I still get delays randomly but they tend to get cleared up in a day or two as opposed to never getting an answer. Before we had the waiting period in WA, I basically was always dealing with a waiting period lol.

I'm in the process now for getting the UPIN, The thing that red flagged me is a duplicate error of my profile with the WSP. I'm sending them thumb prints to add to my record so they can differenterate between the two. Also a request to delete the duplicate if possible. I don't know how that was created in the first place.

I did not .
Besides the gunshow/store vendors telling tales of the UPIN creating a personal micro-registry ,I hate bending my knee.
The idea of preemptively complying isn't for me.
To each their own.

Yeah I mean, Im sure there's some truth to that but I bet it's mostly just shop talk. I personally think someone would have to be oblivious to think that they aren't already adding to some micro registry every time they fill out a 4473. I'd get not going for a UPIN if you'd only ever done handshake deals, never filled out a 4473 or a Form 1 or Form 4, and never applied for a CPL in your state. But if your name is already on government paperwork forms I don't see an issue. That information definitely doesn't just vanish into thin air after they run you.

For me, I got the UPIN to avoid having to wait until the 3, 5, or 10 day (depending on dealer) hold before they can release it with no answer from NICS.

As a guy with a dozen registered NFA items I guess I'm not too worried about having a UPIN.
