You mentioned shooting a match in August. Just a friendly reminder that summer matches can get pretty rough. Be sure to stay hydrated, wear appropriate attire to stay cool, sunscreen (don't forget the sunscreen), a snack or two and something to sit on (camping chair etc.).I can defiantly relate to your last statement, I've been interested in this ever since first becoming a member of the Chehalem valley sportsman's club and even went as far as to buy the full belt and holster rig but work somehow always got in the way and after that it was an elderly family member with dementia however things have finally calmed down enough on both of those issues and I'm just now familiarizing myself with USPSA rules and preparing for the end of month match in August. Can anyone on here enlighten me on the maximum mag extension limit for the Sig P320 X-5 Legion? the magazine measurement sizing in the rules for carry optics confuses me.
definitely good advice. I believe when I last went and observed an event it was in July or August and I remember literally cooking in the sun. There's not a lot of shade at the Dundee range and I'm Irish ( fair skinned) and burn easily. You mentioned shooting a match in August. Also, if at the match and you don't know something or need clarification, just ask!
Lots of folks will go out of their way to help another shooter out.
Lastly, I hope you do get to make out to the match. Be safe and have a great time!![]()

Magnets & Flashlights are Now Legal in USPSA
On March 15, 2021, the USPSA's Board of Directors made some significant changes to the rules involving the use of magnetic retention of magazines, weapon-mounted lights or WML's, and the location of holsters and magazine pouches. We'd like to take some time and further explain these changes and...www.blackscorpiongear.com
Some folks shoot USPSA with their actual carry guns so the rule change will allow them to do that. Adding weight would be another reason but it's not as optimal as having a steel framed gun as far as balance goes….
I'd opt for a non light bearing holster if I was going to shoot USPSA.
Would love to attend just to watch before participating,I've never been and I'm very curious. What's up, fellow members!
A tad bit over a year ago I ventured myself into the competition shooting world, precisely at Practical Pistol on Douglas Ridge Rifle Club and I'm coming here today to invite more people to do the same. Throughout this year and a half of shooting, I was able to bring a few people to participate and some of them really got into it.
Before shooting my first match I thought I was a good shot and I was quickly humbled when the timer went off and despite the few jitters and anxiety on the first few matches, I always had a great time.
Winter months are, like the match director says, for the true warriors as attendance is really low and everybody prefers to stay warm and dry on their Saturday mornings but the few of us that are always there, can help you out.
First Saturday of every month, which if you are reading this today, 01/27, is this next Saturday and I will be there, so, if you've been contemplating going to your first match, signup on Practiscore and reach out. I can help out while you are there!
What you need to compete:
- Gun
- OWB holster
- 2-3 extra mags
- 250 rounds of ammo.
As others helped me, I'm here to help if people have questions and if you want to have an idea of how a stage looks like, here's one of my videos:

I was hoping to go this weekend but my holster and belt rig still hasn't arrived so I'll likely go on Saturday morning as an observer and then plan on participating in August or possibly try one in AlbanyWould love to attend just to watch before participating,I've never been and I'm very curious.
Take your gear and go shoot. Be sure and let them know that you are brand new and will need a little extra guidance. I don't think you will find more helpful people anywhere than at a USPSA or IDPA style pistol shoot. When I started in 2008 I was amazed at how helpful folks were and as I progressed I was able to pay some of that back by working with new shooters quite a bit.Sounds like a plan,I'm new to the activity and just looking to being around the culture.
Thanks ,I'd have to get the gear as I'm brand new to shooting. Are there categories? What kind of guns ,calibers are allowed and is there an entrance fee?Thank you.Take your gear and go shoot. Like they say over at Nike... Just do it!
Not sure where you live but I would highly recommend DRRC Practical Pistol for your first time. The rules are less strict and we are all just trying to have fun and improve our skills. Not saying other places are different but, we do a "time plus" scoring system which is 2 hits anywhere on paper or 1 alpha to neutralize targets. We also have a "new shooter" division which you can show up with whatever gun and setup you have and don't necessarily need to fit in a division. Thanks ,I'd have to get the gear as I'm brand new to shooting. Are there categories? All you need to start is a gun, OWB holster, 3-4 mags and 250 rounds of ammo.
There are multiple 'sports' to choose from so what you have will pigeon hole you into whatever category that particular discipline uses. Thanks ,I'd have to get the gear as I'm brand new to shooting. Are there categories? What kind of guns ,calibers are allowed and is there an entrance fee?Thank you.
