In the coming months, I am planning on some recon missions to northern Nevada. As it is a very ominous assignment with overtones of extreme personal danger, and being apprised of the bat situation, I prefer to be armed to the teeth.

Jokes aside, it appears an Oregon CHL is not valid in the drier state. Utah's, however, does appear so. Queries:

  • Assuming this is correct, is a Utah license the way to go? Best way to go about said?
  • Any weird laws, regulations, or other quirks about carry in Nevada? I'm not finding obnoxious things like magazine capacity limits, but figured I'd toss it out there. (Was thinking a small piece for on-person carry and something heavier like a full sized revolver or AOW scattergun as backup. Though I travel light, so maybe just a concealed J-frame type wheelgun or Walther PPK and call it good.)
  • Unrelated to packing, any things to check out whilst over there? This is largely business trips, but some fun never hurts. I no longer drink nor play the casinos, having reformed my wicked ways (well, some of them), so that would be out.
Thanks much!

AZ is also valid, I believe. There are a fair amount of reservations in NV if I recall and they are a no go for carry regardless of state permits. Need tribal permission or some such BS...

No go for guns in general with the exception of State and federal highways without stops.

Its my understanding that the best coverage is now a Florida permit. Fl. does issue permits to non residents I hear.

Handgunlaw.us is a great resource for traveling. Click on the state on the map and it links to a pdf summary of all the laws to print (best viewed on a PC)

We just got back from NV last week, flew down there for a football tournament with my son. I looked into carry there and was surprised that in 2020 NV stopped recognizing chl's from OR. We had a great trip and saw lots of things, some out of state like Zion NP. What part of the state are you headed to. My wife and I were at Lake Tahoe in October for our 20th, on a day trip from there we stopped at the Bunny Ranch, maybe not your thing though. To be honest here, I only stopped to take pics of the road signs :D

I have been researching this myself. I mostly travel in the west, and AZ seems to give good coverage, it has the least restrictions, and at $65 is the least expensive.
My instate CCW counts for the training requirement. The AZ permit allows carry in west except WA, Ore, CA and CO.
Utah, and FLA, require a specific class and that pushes the cost up. I like that I can get AZ completely on line. The only thing I would have had to pay extra for is finger prints, but I have a family member that will do them for free. DR

Open Carry is legal.

Where will you be traveling? I've lived in Gardnerville, Dayton and Elko.
Surprised you remember those laws after living in Idaho. After a few years in a free state, I accidentally drove through a CA agriculture checkpoint on the border with a glock and extended mags in the center console ha.

At the Bunny Ranch there's liquor in front and poker in the rear…

By, "center console" he means—> :s0066:

I think they only care if you have fruit
That checkpoint is unmanned about 30% of the time, they wave people through without talking to them about another 30% of the time....and the rest of the time they ask about fruit. I make it a point to have fireworks from the reservation or ammo and standard mags in my trunk every time I go through that checkpoint.

Someday I plan to drive through with a fruit basket on my head and see if they stop me.

I once drove through while my wife was eating an apple. I didn't notice but they waived us through. I don't think they really pay attention.

Agreed, don't think they care unless commercial sized trucks; I have seen Hawaii TSA detain people for personal food items though haha. My tint is likely why I get a worker to care to ask... lady noticed and stared for a few then told me to keep moving ha.

My kids still live in Elko and we still have a house there. I like Nevada. Just not as much as Idaho.

Do a Carmen Miranda impression like this when you attempt it!

you might check to see if they have a rule like oregon does where you can carry if you are on your way to a fishing or hunting excursion. Just keep a flyrod set up and box of flies in your car.
