458 socom with heavy subsonic expanding bullets do a good job on deer. I have killed two deer with subsonic rounds. One with the 300 blk and one with the 458 socom. I will never use the 300 blk in this role again. I recovered the deer shot with the 300 but it was a bit sketchy. The deer shot with the 458 was a drt. If you were to switch to lighter super sonic hunting appropriate bullets for the BO, then it is a viable deer round under 200yds. For hunting with subs bigger and heavier is better.
