For the average person…. It is most-likely less time consuming to purchase a suppressor from a dealer with a kiosk, or dealer who has the ability to gather and submit your biometrics. Currently, it is not unheard of to receive tax stamp approvals within a week of submission. The dealer should be able to provide a guesstimate.

But… I haven't built a suppressor from a "barrel shroud" or kit… so my knowledge is limited.

Or capital armory. You do everything online and it arrives at your doorstep. Mine have been 23-24 days from online order time to delivery. Tax stamps have taken 4 days for me. You do have to get your digital prints or fingerprint cards yourself and photo though.

If I'm understanding you correctly, your question is regarding ATF approval timelines between manufacturing your own suppressor vs purchasing a manufactured one.

There have been significant NEGATIVE rule / regulation changes to manufacture your own. IIRC.

There have been significant POSITIVE bureaucratic changes affecting turnaround times for purchasing manufactured ones.

So no, its not faster to get approval to make your own. (Folks whom are SOT FFL holders are in a completely different catagory vs a private individual applying to manufacture).

THIS! The short version is that you used to be able get your Form 1 Stamp, buy pre formed parts that did not have any holes that would allow a bullet to pass through them and drill the parts to allow a bullet to pass though and call it a day. A couple years back the ATF decided that any and all parts that were intended, manufactured or sold as a "suppressor part" or even something that wasn't a suppressor part but you bought it with the intent to use it to build a suppressor, all those things were, as far as the ATF was concerned, already suppressors. So if you bought 7 cups that fit in a storage tube you now had 8 unregistered suppressors, and because they were already suppressors your one stamp to "build your own" was only good for ONE part, but not those parts because they were already suppressors so you would need a Form 4 to buy one

As to the actual barrel shrouds they typically lack useful threads for mounts and end caps and the inside diameter makes it difficult to find freeze plugs or other 'not-a-suppressor-part' things that fit

I love the build your own Form 1 route, but for your first one I would buy one from an established manufacture

Which has nothing to do with suppressors, nor manufacturing them really.

You can run it without the suppressor, or with. Provisio the suppressor isn't integral.

If the shroud is integral, it's more likely a workaround to a barrel length restriction. SBR vs Rifle.

I guess cryptic talk is up for interpretation.
And I do have mfg experience with stock. Not the best but it's efficient and works given materials and equipment.

Me thinks he's talking about a Form1 DIY deal.
If referring to AFT From1 vs. AFT Form4. there is currently no difference in time for approval. A year ago it was different. You can refer to the associated thread on the Form4 approval times for most current wait times.
Not all "shrouds" are created equally I've heard. I would suggest googling the youtuby and gather information from those who have done it. I recommend getting a regularly made can first through a Silencer Co kiosk hosting FFL, so you can get the fingerprint cards reprinted for a nominal fee. You will need those for a Form1 to send into the AFT. Also set up an E-File account with the AFT first so you have that process done before anything.
