Well, today was a special day for a few people in my club who shoot BP muzzleloaders, none more so than for Steve, an infrequent shooter these days, sad to say. One of his pride and joy rifles is this replication of the Baker short rifle made by English BP specialist Peter Dyson a few years back. It is, of course, as finicky as all get-out, but then, when it DOES all come together, it's a hoot. that .62 cal ball over 90gr of 2Fg, really has some serious authority. Here is a short clip of it in action this morning at the 100m range of our club on the Cambs/Northants border -

1. The actual ball - he shoots it in a greased cotton patch....

2. The REAL Baker ball in its chamois leather patch, badly shrunken over the last two hundred years or so....

3. and the real-live odd-ball that came after it - the Brunswick rifle with its odd belted ball that fitted in the two-groove rifling, more often than not...

Andy, Steve and I have come to the concludement that Mr Dyson actually uses TOTW/Rifle Shoppe 'kits' of parts for his beautiful guns. The price - around $5500 - is horrendous, as is the three-four year wait time.

That price, BTW, is old - goodness nose what it is now!

Rob, over on Youtube - britishmuzzleloaders - has a much worked-over Indian-made version that not only looks VERY good, but shoots pretty durn well to boot. They can be bought here, but for some reason the ones I've seen have wood that is of lesser quality than it commonly used for wooden truck pallets...I've seen better orange box wood.

Yikes on that price...

I unlike many out there in internet land like the Indian made replicas....
Just as your experience shows ...I have found them to be good shooters.
The handmade locks and such actually look like the locks and hardware of the original piece that is being copied.
Stocks as you noted are ....well they are wood...and do work....but many are not attractive.
I have tired staining and dying the wood after removing the factory finish....that kinda works....
But wood , being a natural material , does not always react the same.

I've found a better movie in among the 20 or so that I made yesterday - this one, if you slow it down, shows the massive jet of flame that comes out of the touchhole when it lights up the main charge!!
