We've had this in the family for quite some time.
My grandfather had brought it and a very nice 6.5 Arisaka (unmolested) back from the war.

This one has been a family deer rifle, and uses 30-06.
Nobody really knows what it's chambered in, but it was rumored to be something like an Ackley improved, but I'm not so sure...😅
And it leaves a mark on the brass that tells me the chamber wasn't cut very cleanly...🙄
This also taught me that the rumor that 7.7 Japanese rifles were designed to fire the 30-06, were GREATLY untrue, SADLY SO. 😅

It's a decent gun, but it seems to lose accuracy after just a few shots.
It's badly pitted from living on the coast with my Dad, so I'm thinking of refinishing it...just can't decide on what finsh...🤔

I'd like to restore it some, and possibly load the formed brass using a neck sizer and some .303 bullets to see if i can get it to perform better.
Thanks for looking.

I'd do a cast of the chamber to really see what you are working with.

I'd slug the bore before sending .303 bullets (.311 - .313 in diameter) down the pipe. You most likely are fine, with an old, worked over rifle you really don't know.

If it was rechambered with a 30 caliber reamer, the new neck may be too tight to safely load .303 bullets.

i have two type 99s . i got one for ten bucks and my dad brought one back from okinawa. one slugs .314 and one slugs .316. slugging it may save you a lot of wasted effort. the jap ammo i have has .310 bullets. no wonder they lost. norma ammo has .311 bullets
good thing i've got a couple of 1903s

I've got one similar, but with more problems and no sentimental attachments.
I bought this Arisaka, dies and 100 brand new cases a few years ago. I originally was looking to put it back in its original looking configuration, but just getting original/original style furniture would cost more than it would for me to buy a complete rifle. Not to mention all the other things needed to make it at least look right just isn't worth it. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it, but luckily it didn't cost enough that if it sits in the safe forever and I never do anything with it, I'm not worried about it.

@Spec.-K , The case in the center does look a lot like an Ackley Improved, but not quite. The shoulder is "soft", not sharp and it looks to still have too much body taper.
