I ran across this quote in some e-mail today

"Ninety-two percent of all of our homicide suspects have a criminal past." – Indianapolis Public Safety Director Troy Riggs quoted in Indy ranks in top ten for murder"

T
hat said, could those suspects have passed a background check? Probably not for a butter knife let alone a firearm. Yet they seem to have the wherewithal to commit these homicides anyway, in spite of their legal obligation to submit to a background check. So the checks are not stopping them, but they are stopping the criminal's neighbors for protecting themselves.

Cool! Catch 22 meets the government.

Good catch! I'm putting together numbers about Oregon's rates, and adding stuff like this is great as it is one more example not just the background checks don't work, but that gun-control" is dangerous as it distracts all of us from real answers, instead of trying to conform the problem to a "background check" answer. Do you know where we can find this kind of info for Oregon?

The 90%+ number is pretty consistent across the country.

Which is one of the primary reasons gun control is such a complete failure. Roughly 12000 murders committed last year. Probably less than a thousand committed by people without prior felony records.

Yet gun control is predicated on making it harder for the people WITHOUT felony records to own guns. In other words, ignoring 90% of the problem and having little if any effect on the 10% they address.
