Yes there was a short period that leftover CW musket barrels were sleeved to .50 cal. They are very strong and no worries about saftey. They are brazed at the muzzle and breech end with an interference fit. Later, new made barrels were used when the spare ones ran out sometimes in 1870-71.It looks like the barrel is sleeved on the trapdoor.
As I have been looking into it states. The model 1870's had new barrels. But the model 1868 we're sleeved?
