News article forgot a picture of the hiker, so here you go.

I've seen this dozens of times over the years. It always makes me laugh. That bear doing the Ali shuffle - AWESOME. :s0140:
It gets around like a record. I don't remember if it was high school or college that I saw it, either way, it's been over twenty years since I first saw it.

Second bear attack in under a month. Send more Californians!

We have the best National Parks!
My bad, the hiker was from Florida. Deployed bear spay and likely ran. Didn't get very far. No human alive can outrun a bear, especially a brown bear, which can quickly hit 35mph, uphill, and in rough terrain. Running from a brown bear is pretty much the worst thing you could possibly do.

They say bear attacks are rare. Which I find dubious as there are several bear encounters in MT every year, the concerning ones are mostly grizzly (brown).

By July of last year, there were 61 brown bear encounters reported in MT for 2025, 18 involving people.

26 so far this year, 9 with people, and tourist season is just getting started:

Of the only 5 US states with a brown bear population, only AK has more than MT.

Come experience our truly beautiful and amazing wilderness. Just know what to do for a brown bear encounter and how to minimize the chance of one. These are not like the black bears you may be used to.

That's my PSA. I bring this up because so many members over the years here seem to think they are Jeremiah Johnson or Billy Bad @ss. This hiker was an experienced hunter and outdoorsman, very smart, and was "fearless". At least he got to tell his dad he loved him before he was attacked and died.

You don't have to outrun the bear, just your buddy.
