Am I missing something about Ham Radio?

While I am fascinated with ham radio I admit to being a 'simpleton' with it.

Mike, radio and antenna is about all the farther it is going to go with me.

I might mess with EchoLink sometime just to have 'done it' (as it is used a lot as an alternative to using a radio) but nothing I would mess with too much.
